Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed. Under the care of Dr. Harrison and the estate staff, Ara’s physical wounds began the slow, painful process of healing. The deep lacerations across her back were knit together with neat pink scars, and her strength gradually returned.
Yet, the emotional scars ran far deeper.
Ara spent most of her days inside the nursery suite, barely leaving her daughters' side. Every sudden noise—a door shutting downstairs, the sound of heavy footsteps in the hallway, or the roar of an engine in the driveway—sent a sharp jolt of panic through her chest.
Elias did not force her to leave her rooms. Instead, he made a habit of visiting every evening at eight o'clock, after his daily business meetings were concluded.
On a rainy Tuesday night, Elias walked into the nursery carrying a tray with two cups of chamomile tea and a small plate of warm pastries. He found Ara sitting by the fireplace, cradling Elena while Sofia slept peacefully in the crib nearby.
"You're awake," Elias said softly, placing the tray on the coffee table beside her.
"I can't sleep," Ara admitted, offering a faint, tired smile as she adjusted the blanket around the baby. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear the basement door slamming shut."
Elias pulled up a wooden chair, sitting across from her. He picked up one of the tea cups and handed it to her. "It takes time. The mind remembers trauma long after the skin has healed."
Ara accepted the warm cup, her fingers brushing against his calloused hand. She looked at him carefully. He wore a simple black sweater, his dark hair slightly damp from the rain outside, looking less like the ruthless crime boss the city feared and more like a solitary man carrying his own heavy burden.
"Elias?" she asked softly.
"Yes?"
"Why are you doing this?" she asked, her dark eyes searching his face with intense curiosity. "You don't know me. I’m the wife of your worst rival. Keeping us here puts your men at risk, it costs you money, and it complicates your territory... why save us?"
Elias took a slow sip of his tea, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace for a long moment before answering.
"When I was twelve years old," Elias began, his deep voice carrying a quiet, distant sadness, "my father was the leader of the Vance family. He was a hard man, obsessed with discipline and legacy. My mother was a gentle woman who hated the blood on his hands."
Ara listened intently, leaning forward slightly.
"A war broke out with a rival crew from the south," Elias continued. "My father's captains betrayed him. They came to our home in the middle of the night. My mother hid me inside a cold linen closet in the hallway."
He turned his head, his hazel eyes locking onto Ara's with an intense, raw emotion.
"Through the wooden slats of that closet door, Ara," Elias murmured, "I watched those men shoot my mother because she refused to tell them where my father kept his ledgers. She died on the floor five feet away from me, protecting a child who couldn't protect her."
Ara felt a lump form in her throat. She reached out impulsively, laying her hand over his forearm. "Elias..."
"I made a promise to myself that night," Elias said, his jaw tightening. "I swore that if I ever grew powerful enough to command men, I would never allow innocent women and children to be slaughtered for the pride or profit of weak men."
He looked down at the infant sleeping in Ara's arms, his expression softening into something profoundly protective.
"When I found you in that snowdrift, Ara," Elias said gently, "I didn't see Damian Kross's wife. I saw a mother who was willing to die to protect her daughters. I will not let the monsters of this city tear you down."
Tears welled in Ara’s eyes, but for the first time in months, they were not tears of fear. They were tears of profound gratitude. She realized then that beneath the dangerous exterior, beneath the reputation that made strong men tremble, Elias Vance was a man of absolute honor.
Before Ara could speak, the heavy wooden door of the nursery burst open.
Luca Moretti stepped into the room, his dark coat soaked with rain, his face pale and tight with extreme urgency.
"Elias," Luca said, his voice clipped and sharp. "We have a problem."
Elias stood up immediately, stepping between Luca and Ara, his protective instincts instantly flaring. "What is it?"
"Damian Kross just pulled four armored SUVs up to the front gates of the estate," Luca reported, his hand resting firmly on the butt of his holstered firearm. "He brought twenty armed men with him. He’s demanding to see you right now."
Ara gasped, her face draining of all color as she clutched Elena tightly against her chest. "Oh God... he knows. He knows I'm here!"
Elias turned to her, his hazel eyes completely devoid of panic, shining only with a dark, lethal composure.
"Stay here with Mrs. Gable," Elias ordered her smoothly. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except me or Luca."
"Elias, please!" Ara cried out, horror choking her voice. "He’ll kill you! He brought an army!"
May you like
Elias reached down, gently touching her cheek with his thumb, a small, cold smile gracing his lips.
"Ara," Elias whispered softly. "This is my house."
