Chapter 3 - The Sheriff at the Door

Outside the locked bedroom door, the mood in the penthouse had begun to shift from arrogant celebration to subtle, creeping confusion.

It was 10:45 PM.

I could hear Declan’s footsteps echoing heavy and impatient down the marble hallway. He pounded his thick fist against the solid oak door of my master bedroom.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

"Maya!" Declan barked, his voice laced with the slurred, demanding tone of a man who had consumed four glasses of high-end scotch on an empty stomach. "Open this door! Brandon and Chloe need to bring their luggage in! Chloe’s ankles are swollen, and she wants to take a bath in the soaking tub! Stop acting like a dramatic child and let us in!"

I sat comfortably on my plush velvet chaise lounge, holding my tablet, watching the high-definition feed from the subtle security camera mounted in the hallway ceiling directly above his head.

I didn't answer. I didn't say a word.

"Maya!" Declan yelled louder, slamming his palm against the wood. "Did you hear me?! Don't make me get the backup key from the kitchen! I swear to God, if you make a scene in front of my mother again, you’re going to regret it!"

In the living room background of the video feed, I could see Evelyn standing with her arms crossed, nodding approvingly. "Break the door down if you have to, Declan!" she called out loudly. "Show her who owns this place! She thinks she can lock out her own husband? The nerve of that little bitch!"

Brandon was lounging on the sofa, scrolling through his phone, chuckling. "Hey Dec, make sure you get the password for the guest Wi-Fi too! The signal in the hallway is weak!"

Suddenly, the chime of the penthouse’s private elevator echoed through the grand foyer.

DING.

The heavy brass doors of the private elevator slid open directly into the penthouse entryway.

Declan turned around, scowling, annoyed by the interruption. "Who the hell is coming up at this hour? I didn't order anything."

Stepping out of the elevator were four uniformed officers from the County Sheriff’s Department, led by a tall, broad-shouldered Deputy Chief wearing a crisp brown uniform, a heavy utility belt, and a high-visibility tactical vest. Behind them stood two plainclothes civil enforcement officers holding official manila folders stamped with red judicial seals.

The entire living room instantly went silent.

Evelyn froze mid-sentence, her dry mouth dropping open. Brandon slowly pulled his dirty sneakers off the obsidian coffee table, looking up with sudden, nervous wide eyes. Chloe lowered her nail file, her face paling slightly.

Declan blinked, taking a quick step away from my bedroom door, trying to instantly adjust his posture into that of an influential, untouchable high-society gentleman.

"Officers?" Declan said, forcing a broad, strained smile as he stepped into the foyer, holding out a hand. "Can I help you? Is there an issue downstairs in the building lobby? I’m Declan Sterling, owner of the penthouse."

The Deputy Chief ignored Declan’s outstretched hand completely. He pulled a pair of heavy brass-framed reading glasses from his chest pocket, unfolded a crisp three-page legal document, and looked around the grand living room with cold, professional detachment.

"Are you Declan Sterling?" the Deputy Chief asked, his voice booming through the acoustics of the residence.

"Yes, I am," Declan said, his smile faltering, his arm dropping awkwardly to his side. "As I said, this is my home—"

"Mr. Sterling," the Deputy Chief interrupted flatly, "I am Deputy Chief Miller with the County Sheriff’s Office Civil and Enforcement Division. I am serving you with an Emergency Ex-Parte Order of Protection and an Immediate Notice of Judicial Eviction, issued forty-five minutes ago by the Municipal Superior Court under Document #4409."

The silence in the room became absolute.

Declan’s face twitched. "A... a what? What are you talking about? This is a mistake. I am the owner of this property!"

"According to the certified land titles registered with the County Clerk and Aegis Holdings LLC," Deputy Chief Miller stated, reading directly from the paper, "you hold zero equity, zero ownership, and zero tenancy rights to this residence. You were permitted residential access under a temporary guest agreement, which has been formally revoked as of 10:15 PM tonight due to allegations of domestic assault and unlawful endangerment."

"Domestic assault?!" Declan yelled, his face turning an angry, splotchy red. "That’s insane! My wife is inside that room! We had a small verbal disagreement! She's being dramatic!"

"Mr. Sterling," the Deputy Chief said, his tone dropping an octave into a stern, lethal quiet. "The court has reviewed high-definition security video provided from inside this room, showing you striking a female occupant across the face with open force. Judge Mercer signed the emergency order instantly. You are ordered to step away from the premises immediately."

Evelyn let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, rushing forward from the fireplace, her knock-off cardigan fluttering behind her. "This is absurd! You can't do this! This is my son's house! My son is an important man in this city! Who do you think you are?! That gold-digging little whore inside that room is framing him!"

Deputy Chief Miller turned his cold gaze toward Evelyn. "Ma'am, if you interfere with a law enforcement officer executing a judicial warrant, you will be placed in handcuffs and transported to the county detention facility immediately. Do you understand me?"

Evelyn snapped her mouth shut, taking a trembling step back, clutching her neck.

"Now," Deputy Chief Miller continued, turning back to Declan. "You, Mr. Sterling, along with all unauthorized occupants currently inside this residence—which includes the elderly female, the adult male on the sofa, and the young woman—have fifteen minutes to gather your personal identification, mobile devices, and immediate essential medication. All other personal property, clothing, vehicles, and assets located on these premises are currently frozen under a judicial preservation order pending formal divorce and corporate litigation."

"Fifteen minutes?!" Brandon screamed, jumping up from the velvet sofa. "Are you out of your mind?! My wife is pregnant! We just moved all our bags here! We sold our apartment!"

"Then I suggest you grab your bags and head for the elevator, sir," the Deputy Chief said without a shred of empathy. "At 11:05 PM, anyone remaining inside this penthouse will be arrested for Criminal Trespass in the First Degree."

Declan looked like he had been struck by lightning. His eyes darted frantically toward my locked bedroom door. He lunged past the officers, rushing down the hallway toward the door, screaming at the top of his lungs.

"MAYA!" Declan roared, pounding his fists against the oak paneling with wild, frantic desperation. "MAYA, OPEN THIS DOOR! WHAT DID YOU DO?! CALL YOUR LAWYER AND STOP THIS RIGHT NOW! MAYA!"

Before his hands could hit the door a third time, two tall Sheriff’s deputies grabbed Declan by his arms, twisted his hands behind his back with effortless force, and slammed him against the wall.

THUD.

"Declan Sterling, you are under arrest for violation of a protective order and resisting civil execution," the deputy barked, clicking a pair of cold, heavy steel handcuffs around Declan’s wrists.

"AAGH! LET ME GO!" Declan shrieked, his voice cracking, the polished, arrogant facade completely shattering into pathetic, desperate whimpering. "MAYA! TELL THEM TO STOP! I'M YOUR HUSBAND! MAYA!"

I pulled open the lock of my bedroom door.

The heavy oak door swung open smoothly.

I stepped out into the hallway, dressed in a sleek, pristine white silk suit, my heels clicking softly against the floor. I stood five feet away from Declan, who was pinned against the wall in handcuffs, his hair disheveled, tears of rage and fear streaming down his face.

The entire room—the deputies, Evelyn, Brandon, Chloe—stared at me in absolute shock.

I looked down at Declan. My face was completely expressionless. My eyes were as cold as polished marble.

"Maya..." Declan gasped, his voice shaking violently. "Please... tell them it's a mistake... please... I'm sorry about... about earlier... I lost my temper... please don't do this to me..."

Evelyn rushed to the edge of the hallway, tears streaming down her face, her hands clasped together in desperate begging. "Maya! Maya, my child! Please! He's your husband! You can't let them take him away in handcuffs! Think of the family name! Think of what people will say!"

I looked at Evelyn. Then at Brandon. Then at Chloe.

Then, I turned my gaze back to Declan.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small, silk jewelry box, and slowly slid off my ten-carat diamond engagement ring—a ring that I had paid for myself when Declan claimed his 'family trust funds were temporarily tied up in European bonds.'

I stepped forward, held the ring over Declan’s open, handcuffed hand, and dropped it into his palm.

"You told me earlier tonight that this was your house, Declan," I said, my voice echoing through the silent penthouse like a funeral bell. "You told me that I was nothing but a rich woman who needed to learn her place."

May you like

I leaned in close, whispering into his ear so only he could hear:

"Your fifteen minutes are up. Get out of my penthouse."
