Chapter 4 - The Shield

Two weeks passed. The quiet mansion had transformed into a bustling haven. Clare had begun to talk more, her timid voice gradually filling the high-ceilinged rooms as she followed Paul everywhere he went. She refused to sleep unless she knew where her baby brothers were, so Paul had installed a custom nursery directly adjacent to his own master bedroom.
Every evening, after endless meetings with lawyers and corporate investigators, Paul would return home, shed his designer jacket, and sit on the floor of the nursery, learning how to hold tiny Leo without breaking him, while Clare showed him how to properly wind up the musical mobile hanging above Tom's crib.
"Grandma Margaret would have loved you," Paul told Clare one evening as they sat in the library reading a picture book.
"Was she nice?" Clare asked, looking up from a drawing she was coloring with bright yellow crayons.
"She was the softest, strongest person I ever knew," Paul said, his voice thick with emotion. "When my mom and dad died, I thought the world was a cold, dark place. But she built a wall of love around me so high that nothing scary could get in."
Clare looked at him for a long moment, then reached out her small hand and rested it on his knee. "You build good walls too, Paul."
The moment was interrupted by the sudden chime of Paul's private phone. It was Arthur.
"Paul, we have a breach," Arthur said quickly. "Sterling's legal team just filed an emergency petition in family court claiming that an unidentified party has illegally detained three minors belonging to an open estate investigation. They know the kids are with you."
Paul's eyes hardened. "How did they track them?"
"A local nurse at the hospital where Dr. Vance ran the initial blood work leaked the infants' genetic records. Sterling's investigators matched the DNA to Julian Vance's estate. Sterling knows that if the children are assigned a court-appointed guardian, he can file to seal Julian's records permanently under the guise of protecting the heirs."
"He wants to silence the kids so the warehouse murder charges never resurface," Paul said coldly.
"He's coming to the estate with a court order and state marshals in two hours," Arthur reported. "He thinks he's going to walk in here, take the children, and place them in an isolated facility under his firm's control."
Paul stood up, his face devoid of fear, replaced only by an absolute, icy resolve. "Let him come. Call the media. Call the Attorney General's office. And bring the original file on the Grand View Hotel acquisition."
Clare looked up from her coloring book, sensing the shift in the air. "Is the bad man coming?"
Paul knelt in front of her, taking both of her small hands in his. "Clare, do you remember when you held that wooden spoon in the basement to protect your brothers?"
May you like
She nodded slowly.
"Well, now it's my turn to hold the spoon," Paul said with a gentle smile. "Nobody is taking you or your brothers from this house. Ever."
