Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

Miller scrambled backward, trying to reach for a handgun tucked into his belt, but Marcus was already behind him, kicking his feet out from under him and slamming him face-first onto the cold, wet concrete.

"Get your hands off me!" Miller shrieked, his polished arrogance evaporating into pathetic whines. "Do you know who I am?! I own half the city council!"

"Not anymore, Sam," I said, walking slowly over to him and stepping heavily on his outstretched hand. "While you were waiting here to murder a mother, my legal team was executing an emergency freeze on every bank account associated with Miller Logistics and Apex Specialty Pharmacy."

Outside, sirens began to wail in the distance—dozens of red and blue lights cutting through the thick Hudson fog as federal marshals and NYPD cruisers surrounded the pier.

Special Prosecutor Vance—the real federal authority—stepped through the breached doorway, flanked by ten armed agents.

"Daniel," Prosecutor Vance said, looking at the scene. "We caught Miller's transport truck three miles north with forty crates of stolen pediatric biologics."

"The chain of custody is intact, Prosecutor," I replied, stepping off Miller’s hand. "Along with recorded evidence of attempted murder, extortion, federal pharmaceutical fraud, and kidnapping."

Prosecutor Vance looked down at Sam Miller with profound disgust. "Sam Miller, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder."

As the agents dragged Miller and Vance away in handcuffs, screaming threats at their lawyers, I walked over to Maya, who was sitting against a crate, trembling violently in shock.

I took off my heavy cashmere coat and wrapped it around her shivering shoulders.

"It's over, Maya," I said gently. "It's all over."

She looked up at me, tears streaming down her face, her hands clutching my coat tightly. "Lily... is Lily really safe?"

I pulled out my phone and clicked the live video feed from Mount Sinai Hospital. On the screen was six-year-old Lily, sitting up in a clean, brightly lit hospital bed, smiling happily while drinking a box of apple juice, flanked by two gentle nurses and Marcus’s guards.

Maya buried her face in her hands, her sobs no longer filled with terror, but with overwhelming, unadulterated relief.
