Chapter 10 - The Family Shield

Six months later.

The autumn air had returned to Long Island, turning the oak trees across the estate into brilliant hillsides of red, gold, and deep amber.

In the grand dining room of the Moretti mansion, a long oak table was set for dinner with fine china, crystal glasses, and silver cutlery.

At the head of the table sat Dominic Moretti.

To his right sat Julian Vance, reviewing final security reports for the upcoming quarter. To his left sat Elena, dressed in a sleek charcoal business suit, going over the estate’s monthly residential budget and staff management files.

And at the center of the long table sat Clara, sitting on a booster seat, happily drawing a picture of a large black dog with a bright red crayon on a piece of cream paper.

Beside her chair, lying on a thick velvet orthopedic bed near the roaring fireplace, rested Bruno.

The heavy double doors of the dining room opened, and Thomas the locksmith stepped inside, carrying a small leather pouch.

“Mr. Moretti,” Thomas said, bowing respectfully. “The final master key audit for the entire North Shore network is complete. Every bank vault, every private residence, and every security terminal is twenty-four hours secure.”

Dominic took the pouch, pulled out a single brass key—a newly minted master key—and set it on the table.

He looked around the grand room.

He looked at Julian, his most loyal officer who had stood by his side through fire and rain. He looked at Elena, a woman who had brought order, honesty, and warmth back into the administrative heart of his household. He looked at old Bruno, sleeping peacefully near the hearth.

And finally, he looked at Clara, who was holding up her finished drawing with a wide, radiant smile.

“Look, Mr. Moretti!” Clara called out across the long table. “I drew our house!”

Dominic took the paper from her hand.

On the cream sheet was a crayon drawing of the massive stone mansion, surrounded by green boxwoods, a bright yellow sun, a giant black dog, and three figures standing hand-in-hand: a mother, a little girl, and a tall man in a dark black suit.

Dominic looked at the drawing for a long moment.

The ruthless mafia boss—a man who had spent forty-one years surviving in a world of betrayal, shadows, and cold ambition—felt a deep, unshakeable warmth fill his chest.

He didn't see an empire built on fear anymore.

He saw a home built on loyalty, protected by truth, and saved by a child with a pink rabbit lunchbox and a plastic spoon.

Dominic pulled a small silver frame from his desk drawer, carefully slipped Clara’s drawing inside, and set it permanently on the table beside his master security console.

“It’s perfect, Clara,” Dominic said, his deep voice rich with absolute peace. “It’s the best picture in the house.”

Outside the tall stained-glass windows, the evening rain began to fall softly over the slate roofs of Long Island.

But inside the Moretti estate, the lights were bright, the fire was hot, the doors were locked, and the cameras would never go dark again.
