Chapter 9 - The New Guard

Three weeks later.

The spring weather had settled permanently over Long Island. The trees were heavy with lush green leaves, and the air smelled of salt from the Sound mixed with fresh cut grass and lilacs.

In the rear courtyard, the old black iron kennel building had been completely transformed.

The old rusted bars had been replaced with spacious, glass-walled enclosures equipped with heated floor tiles, clean running water fountains, and private outdoor play yards. Above the main entrance hung a polished mahogany sign with carved gold letters:

CLARA’S HAVEN - MORETTI CANINE REHABILITATION CENTER

A team of three professional veterinary nurses in clean teal scrubs moved through the building, tending to five young German shepherd puppies that Dominic had recently imported from Germany to begin training for the estate's future security detail.

Sitting on a green wooden bench near the central lawn was Clara, wearing a bright yellow sundress and small white sneakers.

Beside her sat Bruno.

The old shepherd looked like a completely different animal. His coat was thick, glossy, and black as jet. His ribs were no longer visible beneath his well-padded chest, and his eyes were bright, clear, and full of life. He was comfortably chewing on a large rubber ring while Clara read aloud to him from her green leather book.

Dominic walked down the stone lane, accompanied by Julian Vance and two junior security guards.

Dominic wore a dark grey tailored suit without a tie, carrying a small leather bag under his arm.

He stopped near the wooden bench, watching Clara finish her sentence.

“...and the rabbit was real at last,” Clara read slowly, tracing her finger under the printed words. She looked up and beamed when she saw Dominic. “Mr. Moretti! Look! Bruno learned how to sit without hurting his hip!”

“Is that so?” Dominic asked, stepping over to the bench.

Clara set her book down, turned to Bruno, and lifted her small hand. “Bruno, sit!”

The old dog immediately lifted his chest, tucked his hind legs under him, and sat perfectly straight on the grass, his eyes locked onto Clara with absolute devotion and discipline.

Dominic let out a low, approving chuckle. “Impressive. He listens to you better than he ever listened to Victor.”

Julian chuckled softly beside Dominic. “He knows who controls the turkey supply now, Boss.”

Dominic reached into the leather bag he carried and pulled out a small, custom-made leather dog collar. Attached to the front was a polished brass tag engraved with clear letters:

BRUNO - PROTECTOR OF CLARA

Dominic knelt down beside the dog, unclipped his old worn collar, and fastened the new leather one around Bruno’s neck.

Bruno gave a soft, happy woof, nudging Dominic’s shoulder with his damp nose.

Clara reached out and ran her fingers over the shiny brass tag. “It’s pretty!”

“It suits him,” Dominic said, standing up and looking at the young girl. “Clara, tomorrow morning, a small white bus is going to arrive at the front gate.”

Clara blinked. “A bus?”

“Yes,” Dominic explained warmly. “It’s the school bus for St. Jude’s Academy in town. You are going to start your first day of preschool.”

Clara’s face lit up with excitement. “Will I have crayons? And a desk?”

“You will have all the crayons you want,” Dominic promised. “And every afternoon when you come back through those gates, Bruno will be waiting right here on this porch for you.”

Clara jumped off the bench, threw her small arms around Dominic’s waist, and gave him a quick, tight hug.

Dominic froze for half a second—a man unaccustomed to physical affection from anyone—before laying his large hand gently on her back, resting his palm over her tiny shoulders.

“Thank you, Mr. Moretti,” Clara whispered into his suit coat.

“You’re welcome, small one,” Dominic murmured softly.
