Chapter 8 - The Confession on Tape

Sarah Jenkins stumbled backward into her living room, her face as pale as a fresh bedsheet, her hands trembling violently as she clutched the lapels of her silk bathrobe.
“Please...” Sarah whimpered, looking frantically past me toward Damian, who stepped into the house like an impending executioner, closing the heavy front door behind him with a sharp, echoing click. “Please don't kill me! I was just following Dr. Vance’s orders! He threatened to revoke my nursing license if I didn't sign the transfer papers!”
“Liar!” I shouted, my voice ringing loudly through the quiet, luxurious house. I stepped directly into her personal space, pointing a finger at her trembling face. “You didn't do it because you were threatened! You did it for four hundred thousand dollars in cash!”
Sarah collapsed onto her plush velvet sofa, weeping hysterically, covering her face with her hands. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, Maya! Julianna Marchetti came to the hospital six months before your delivery! She offered us millions! She said she needed healthy triplets from a mother who had no family, no powerful husband, no money to fight back in court!”
Hearing those words spoken aloud—confirming that I had been targeted specifically because I was poor, alone, and vulnerable—sent a wave of burning, righteous anger through my chest.
Damian walked slowly over to the center of the room. He pulled a sleek, military-grade digital voice recorder from his pocket, setting it down on the glass coffee table in front of Sarah. He tapped the red record button.
“Sarah,” Damian said, his deep voice carrying a terrifying authority that left no room for hesitation. “You are going to speak into this recorder. You are going to state your name, your former role at Saint Jude’s, and you are going to detail every single step of the operation that took Maya Lin’s children.”
Sarah looked up through her tear-stained eyes, her voice trembling. “If... if I confess to this, I’ll go to prison for twenty years!”
Damian leaned down, resting his massive hands on the edge of the glass table, bringing his face inches from hers.
“Sarah,” Damian whispered softly, his gray eyes flashing with lethal intent. “If you confess into that recorder, you go to a federal prison with a team of lawyers who will keep you alive in a minimum-security wing. If you refuse... my men will leave this house, and you will disappear into the ocean before sunset. Choose carefully.”
Sarah didn't hesitate. The choice between a prison cell and a dark grave was painfully simple.
She reached out with a trembling hand, pulling the recorder closer to her lips.
For thirty agonizing minutes, Sarah Jenkins spoke into the microphone.
She detailed everything. She explained how Dr. Vance had monitored my pregnancy through the free clinic at Saint Jude’s, how he had intentionally scheduled my delivery under the guise of a fabricated emergency, how they had administered heavy general anesthesia to keep me completely unconscious, and how Julianna Marchetti’s private medical transport team had whisked my three newborn infants out through the service basement while I was being moved to the recovery wing.
She detailed every offshore account, every cash transaction, and every falsified medical document signed by the hospital administrator, Arthur Gable.
When she finally finished, sobbing, her head resting against her knees, Damian picked up the recorder, stopping the tape.
He looked at Marcus, who was standing by the front door.
“Marcus,” Damian ordered calmly. “Deliver a copy of this audio file directly to the lead federal prosecutor on the Vance case. Call the State Police to pick up Miss Jenkins.”
“Yes, Boss,” Marcus replied, taking the device and stepping outside.
I stood in the center of Sarah’s living room, watching the woman who had helped tear my life apart weep on her expensive sofa. I didn't feel rage anymore. I felt a profound, overwhelming sense of liberation.
The lies were dead. The truth was out. The monsters who had stolen my children were being hunted down one by one.
Damian walked over to me, gently placing his large hand on the small of my back.
“Are you ready to go home, Maya?” Damian asked softly.
May you like
I looked up into his gray eyes, seeing no longer a terrifying mob boss, but a man who had used his absolute power to give me back my justice, my children, and my humanity.
“Yes,” I whispered, resting my hand over his. “Let's go home.”
