Chapter 9 - The Custody of the Heart

Three weeks passed like a beautiful, sunlit dream.
The legal storm surrounding Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital blew through the state like a hurricane. Dr. Harold Vance, Administrator Arthur Gable, and Nurse Sarah Jenkins were formally indicted on dozens of federal counts including human trafficking, medical fraud, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The hospital’s board was completely dismantled, and the facility was placed under federal oversight.
In the public eye, Maya Lin was no longer the crazy, grieving diner maid who had lost her babies. She was the hero mother whose relentless love had uncovered one of the largest medical scandals in state history.
At the Marchetti estate, life had settled into a warm, joyful rhythm.
The grand nursery was filled with laughter every single day. Leo, Luca, and Evelyn were thriving. They were no longer crying, distressed infants. They were healthy, energetic toddlers who spent their mornings running across the sprawling green lawns of the estate, chasing the estate’s gentle golden retriever, and spending every waking moment glued to my side.
I had completely moved into the master suite adjoining the nursery.
Every evening, after feeding the triplets and reading them bedtime stories, Damian and I would sit together on the grand balcony overlooking the ocean, drinking wine, talking for hours about everything and nothing.
The terrifying mob boss the world feared was a completely different man behind the stone walls of his estate. He was quiet, deeply intelligent, fiercely protective, and possessed a dry, subtle humor that made me laugh in ways I hadn't laughed in years.
On a warm Friday evening, as the sun set over the glowing horizon, turning the sky into shades of deep orange and purple, Damian walked out onto the balcony holding a thick leather folder.
He sat down in the wicker armchair beside me, setting the folder on the small glass table between us.
“What is that?” I asked, looking at the formal legal seals stamped across the front cover.
Damian took a slow sip of his bourbon, his gray eyes fixing on my face with an intense, steady gaze.
“It’s the official legal petition for full parental rights and custody restoration,” Damian explained softly. “My legal team worked with the State Supreme Court over the past two weeks. The fraudulent death certificates from Saint Jude’s have been officially voided. Your name has been legally restored as the sole biological mother on Leo, Luca, and Evelyn’s birth certificates.”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy welled up in my eyes. I reached out, touching the crisp white pages of the legal document.
“They’re officially mine,” I whispered, my voice trembling with profound emotion. “No one can ever question it again.”
“They were always yours, Maya,” Damian said quietly.
He paused, adjusting his position, leaning closer to me.
“However,” Damian continued, his voice dropping into a deep, husky register that sent a delicious shiver straight down my spine. “There is a secondary clause attached to the estate trust.”
I looked up at him, my brow furrowing slightly. “What secondary clause?”
“When Julianna passed, the Marchetti family trust allocated forty percent of the syndicate’s legal holdings to her children,” Damian explained smoothly. “Now that those children are legally recognized as your biological offspring, those holdings automatically transfer to you as their legal guardian.”
I blinked in shock. “Damian... that’s hundreds of millions of dollars! I don't want your family’s money! I just want my children!”
“I know you don't want the money, Maya,” Damian smiled softly, reaching out and taking my trembling hand into his massive palm. His thumb gently stroked the back of my hand. “That’s precisely why you’re the only person on this earth qualified to hold it.”
He looked into my hazel eyes, his expression shifting into something profoundly serious, raw, and vulnerable.
“Maya,” Damian spoke softly, his gray eyes holding mine with an intensity that made my breath catch in my throat. “Over the past month, I’ve watched you bring light back into a house that has been dark for decades. I’ve watched my late sister’s grave sin turn into the greatest blessing this family has ever known. I’ve watched three broken babies become whole because of your love.”
He squeezed my hand gently.
“And I have fall completely, irreversibly in love with you.”
My heart slammed against my ribs like a wild drum. The air in my lungs vanished completely. I stared at him, seeing the powerful, dangerous man who had stood beside me in the rain, who had thrown a corrupt doctor against a window for me, who had protected my children with his life... offering me his heart without a single condition.
“Damian...” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“You don't have to answer now,” Damian said softly, starting to pull his hand back politely. “You have your life back. You have your children. You are free to take them and live anywhere in the world you want. I will build you a house in Europe, in California, anywhere you choose, and secure you for the rest of your life.”
Before he could pull his hand away, I reached out with both hands, gripping his massive fingers tightly, refusing to let him go.
“Damian,” I said, looking straight into his pale gray eyes, my heart bursting with an undeniable, overwhelming truth. “Do you really think I’m going to take our children and leave the man who saved my life?”
Damian froze, his breath catching in his chest. “Our children?”
May you like
“Our children,” I repeated firmly, a radiant smile breaking across my face through my tears. “You raised them for fourteen months. You protected them. You fought for them. They love you, Damian. And I love you.”
Damian didn't hesitate. He pulled me out of my chair, lifting me into his broad arms, and pulled me into a deep, breathtaking kiss that seemed to erase every shadow, every tear, and every night of grief I had ever endured.
