Chapter 3 - The Blood Alliance

The revelation hung in the air like poison.

Don Ricci—the oldest, most respected statesman of the syndicate—was the man who had ordered my husband's murder. And Vivian Romano, Alessandro’s own fiancée, was his willing accomplice, laundering the blood money through her family's aristocratic art foundations.

"Marco," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Where is Don Ricci?"

"He's in the east wing guest quarters, Boss," Marco replied instantly, his hand resting on the hilt of his tactical knife. "He claimed he had a severe migraine and requested to rest before the midnight assembly."

"He isn't resting," Alessandro said, walking toward the weapons cabinet built into the oak wall. He punched in a combination, and the panel slid open, revealing an array of suppressed handguns, tactical submachine guns, and body armor. "He's waiting for his men to secure the perimeter gates."

Alessandro pulled a sleek black Beretta 92FS from the rack, checked the magazine with a practiced, fluid motion, and racked the slide. He popped a suppressor onto the barrel and slipped it into his shoulder holster.

He turned to me. His eyes were dark, but there was a strange, fierce protectiveness in them that made my heart leap in my chest.

"Clara," he said, stepping toward the sofa. "You and Emma cannot stay in this room. If Ricci realizes the drive is open, his men will hit the main house."

"Where do we go?" I asked, pulling Emma closer as she woke up, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "Mommy? What's happening?"

"Shh, sweetie, it's okay," I whispered, kissing her hair.

"There is a reinforced panic cellar beneath the wine cellar," Alessandro instructed. "It has independent air filtration, hardened steel doors, and dedicated communications. Marco will take you there now."

"No," I said firmly, standing up with Emma in my arms.

Alessandro blinked, surprised by my sudden defiance. "No?"

"I am not hiding in a basement while you fight the men who killed my husband," I said, my voice steady and iron-hard. "Julian died because he was alone. I spent two years being afraid of shadows, being treated like dirt by people like Vivian because I thought I was helpless. I am not helpless anymore."

Alessandro stared at me for a long, silent second. The corner of his mouth twitched into the faint, ghost of a admiring smirk.

"You are remarkable, Clara Bennett," he murmured softly. He turned to Marco. "Change of plans. Marco, you stay with them. Take position in the security monitoring suite adjacent to the cellar. If anyone comes down those stairs who isn't me, kill them."

"Understood, Boss," Marco nodded heavily.

"Wait," I called out as Alessandro turned toward the door.

He stopped, looking back over his shoulder.

"Be careful," I whispered.

Alessandro looked at me, then down at Emma, who held up her little blue rabbit. "Mr. Bunny says don't let the bad men win," Emma said softly.

Alessandro touched the edges of his jacket, a genuine, warm smile breaking through his hardened features for the very first time. "Tell Mr. Bunny that in Milan, I am the worst man there is."

With that, he stepped out of the study, the heavy oak doors closing behind him with a final, ominous click.
