Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Marble

The descent into the lower levels of Villa Moretti felt like entering an ancient catacomb. The grand, opulent marble halls above gave way to cool, exposed stone archways, dim sconce lighting, and the heavy smell of oak wine barrels and aging concrete.

Marco led us through the labyrinthine wine cellar, his heavy boots making no sound against the flagstone floor. He carried a suppressed submachine gun held low at his waist, his eyes constantly scanning the dark corners between the massive wine racks.

"In here," Marco whispered, stopping before a heavy steel door disguised seamlessly behind a sliding oak rack of expensive vintages. He pressed a hidden panel on the wall, and the heavy door hissed open with a soft hydraulic sigh.

The security suite inside was small but dense with technology. Bank after bank of monitor screens displayed monochrome feeds from every hallway, courtyard, and entrance of the massive estate.

"Sit," Marco told us, locking the heavy steel door behind us. "We are safe here. These walls are reinforced with three inches of Kevlar-lined steel plate. Not even an RPG is getting through that door."

I sat on a metal stool, setting Emma on my lap. She cuddled against my chest, playing quietly with the ears of her rabbit, her small body exhausted from the late hour.

I turned my eyes toward the wall of security monitors.

On Camera 4—the east wing corridor—I saw Alessandro moving like a phantom through the shadows. He walked with a fluid, lethal grace that was horrifying and hypnotic all at once. Two of his personal guards followed a few paces behind him, their weapons raised.

They stopped before the double doors of the VIP suite assigned to Don Ricci.

Alessandro didn't knock.

With a brutal, exploding kick, he shattered the door latch, sending the heavy doors crashing inward.

The security feed on Camera 4 suddenly flickered with high-frequency static as heavy muzzle flashes strobed across the room! I covered my mouth to suppress a gasp. Though no sound reached us through the soundproof bunker walls, the violence on the screen was absolute.

Two of Ricci's guards inside the suite collapsed instantly under Alessandro’s precise, icy fire.

Alessandro stepped into the center of the room, raising his weapon toward the far corner where Don Ricci was frantically trying to pull a heavy iron key from a wall safe.

The video feed flickered again—and suddenly went completely black!

"What happened?" I cried, leaning forward. "Marco, the screens!"

Marco swore under his breath, stepping quickly toward the main control console. "Someone cut the local fiber relay in the sub-basement! They didn't just breach the house—they have an insider inside the security hub!"

Before Marco could cycle the backup power, a sudden, violent shudder rocked the concrete floor beneath our feet!

BOOM!

A heavy explosion detonated somewhere directly above us, sending a shower of fine grey dust cascading down from the ceiling joints! The lights in the bunker flickered violently before plunging us into pitch blackness!

Emma shrieked, burying her face into my neck. "Mommy! Mommy!"

"I'm here, baby! I've got you!" I yelled, holding her with all my strength.

Emergency red backup lights clicked on a second later, bathing the small metallic room in an eerie, crimson glow.

A harsh, metallic scraping noise sounded from the hallway directly outside our steel door.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

It was the sound of heavy iron tools striking against the reinforced door frame.

Marco spun around, raising his submachine gun toward the door, his face pale under the red light. "They found the access corridor. Stay behind me, Clara!"

The heavy steel door groaned as a thermite cutting torch burst through the center seam, sending a blinding spray of white-hot sparks flying into the dark room! The smell of burning metal filled the air!

Someone was cutting their way in. And they weren't here to negotiate.
