Chapter 10 - The New Rule

Six months later, summer had arrived in Manhattan.

The renovations on the 5th Avenue penthouse were complete. The shattered glass had been replaced with bullet-resistant triple-pane crystal, the marble pillars were restored, and the grand living room was once again a masterpiece of luxury.

But it was no longer cold.

Soft rugs covered the marble floors, colorful toys filled the corners of the study, and the sound of children’s music drifted through the high-ceilinged halls.

At 10:00 AM on a warm Tuesday morning, Gabriel sat at his massive mahogany desk in his private office, conducting a high-level video conference with four international banking executives.

He wore a crisp charcoal suit, looking every bit the formidable, terrifying sovereign of New York commerce.

"The merger will proceed on Friday," Gabriel stated smoothly into the camera. "My terms are non-negotiable. If your board hesitates—"

Suddenly, a soft dragging sound echoed outside his office door.

Scrape. Pause. Scrape.

Gabriel stopped talking mid-sentence.

The four banking executives on the screen paused, looking confused. "Mr. Marlowe? Is everything alright?"

The heavy oak doors of the office were pushed open from the bottom.

Chloe—now fourteen months old and walking on sturdy, wobbly legs—stumbled into the room wearing a bright floral dress, carrying a plastic yellow duck in her hand.

Walking right behind her, wearing an elegant white sundress, was Hannah.

Chloe marched straight past the high-end furniture, approached Gabriel’s desk, slapped both hands against his trousers, and let out a triumphant "Dada!"

The four bankers on the screen gasped in absolute, stunned shock, their eyes wide as they recognized the infant who had just interrupted the most feared businessman in the state.

Gabriel didn't scold her. He didn't order them out.

He leaned down, picked Chloe up in his broad arms, and set her comfortably on his lap. Chloe immediately reached out, grabbed his gray silk tie, and began inspecting the knot with great interest.

Gabriel looked back at the computer screen, his face completely calm, dark, and utterly unbothered.

"Gentlemen," Gabriel said smoothly into the microphone. "My chief security advisor has just entered the room. The meeting is adjourned."

Without waiting for their reply, Gabriel ended the call, shutting the laptop lid with a soft click.

Hannah walked over to the desk, a teasing, radiant smile on her face. "I'm sorry, Mr. Marlowe. I told her you were in an important meeting."

Gabriel stood up, carrying Chloe against his chest, and reached out with his free arm to pull Hannah into his side, kissing her softly on the temple.

"There is nothing in this city more important than this room," Gabriel said gently, looking between his wife and their daughter.

Chloe babble-laughed, pressing her sticky, apple-juice-covered face against Gabriel’s expensive suit lapel.

Gabriel didn't care about the suit. He didn't care about the millions waiting across the city.

He held his family close, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sunlit skyline of Manhattan—the king who had conquered the city, not with iron and lead, but by opening his door to a crawling baby.
