Chapter 5 - The Shadows In Queens

By ten o'clock that evening, the storm outside had intensified, slamming heavy rain against the glass of the penthouse.
Inside the quiet study, Gabriel sat at his desk, reviewing shipping manifests on his tablet while Chloe slept soundly in a small basket near the fireplace. Hannah was sitting on the leather sofa, fast asleep from sheer emotional and physical exhaustion, a heavy wool blanket pulled up to her chin.
The study door opened quietly. Lucian stepped inside, closing the door without a sound. He walked over to Gabriel’s desk and laid a black file down on the mahogany surface.
"Mark Price," Lucian said in a low whisper so as not to wake the sleeping woman and child. "We found him."
Gabriel looked up. "Where?"
"In an intensive care unit at St. John’s Hospital in Queens," Lucian replied, his face grim. "He didn't just owe money to small-time loan sharks, Gabriel. He owed money to Julian Moretti."
Gabriel went perfectly still. "Dominic Moretti’s brother?"
"The very same," Lucian nodded. "Julian runs the financial extortion arm of the Moretti syndicate out of Astoria. Mark Price took a three-hundred-thousand-dollar high-interest loan to cover his gambling debts six months ago. When he couldn't pay, Julian’s men broke both his legs and threw him in an alley two nights ago."
Gabriel’s dark eyes narrowed. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place with terrifying speed.
"Does Julian know Mark’s wife worked in my penthouse?" Gabriel asked.
"Not until today," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Julian’s men raided Mark’s abandoned apartment in Brooklyn this afternoon looking for assets. They found a stack of Hannah’s old paychecks... issued by Marlowe Enterprises."
Gabriel’s jaw set like granite. "Dominic knows."
"Dominic knows," Lucian confirmed. "Dominic was already looking for a way to hit back after what happened at Warehouse B this morning. Now he knows that the maid working in your penthouse is the ex-wife of a man who owes his brother three hundred thousand dollars."
Before Gabriel could answer, the security intercom on his desk gave a sharp, double beep.
Gabriel answered instantly. "Speak."
The voice of the chief perimeter guard came through, laced with static and heavy tension. "Mr. Marlowe! We have a breach at the service entrance on 5th Avenue! Four black vans just rammed the delivery gate! Armed men inside the lobby!"
Hannah’s eyes snapped open on the sofa. She sat up violently, her heart hammering against her ribs, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at Gabriel.
Chloe woke up with a soft, startled cry in her basket.
Gabriel stood up slowly, calmly pulling his heavy custom firearm from his desk drawer. He looked across the room at Hannah, his eyes completely calm, dark, and utterly unshakeable.
"Lucian," Gabriel commanded smoothly. "Initiate lockdown protocol Delta. Seal the elevators."
"They aren't taking the elevators, Gabriel," Lucian said, drawing two silenced pistols from beneath his coat. "They cut the main power grid. They’re taking the emergency stairs."
Hannah scrambled off the sofa, rushing to the basket and lifting Chloe into her arms, clutching the baby tightly against her chest. "Mr. Marlowe... what’s happening?!"
Gabriel walked across the room, stopping directly in front of her. He reached out, his broad, strong hand gently resting against the side of her neck, his thumb wiping a tear from her cheek.
"Listen to me, Hannah," Gabriel said, his deep voice penetrating the panic in her mind like an anchor in a storm. "You step into the safe room behind that bookcase. You lock the steel door from the inside. You do not open it for anyone except me or Lucian. Do you understand?"
Hannah looked into his dark eyes, seeing no fear, no hesitation—only an absolute, lethal promise of protection.
"I understand," she whispered.
Gabriel turned to Lucian. "Put them inside."
Lucian pressed a hidden switch behind the oak bookshelf. The heavy wall slid open with a soft pneumatic hiss, revealing a concrete-reinforced safe room equipped with independent air filtration and security monitors.
Hannah stepped inside with Chloe, looking back at Gabriel one last time as the heavy steel door began to glide shut.
"Gabriel..." she called out, her voice breaking. "Please be careful."
May you like
Gabriel offered her a tiny, ghost of a smile—the first true smile she had ever seen on his face in three long years.
"This is my house, Hannah," Gabriel said softly as the door sealed shut. "Nobody leaves it without my permission."
