Chapter 10 - The First Step

One year later.

The ocean breeze carried the clean, salty scent of the tide through the open windows of our living room. Soft sunlight spilled across the hardwood floors, illuminating stacks of baby toys and colorful picture books.

Leo stood wobbling on his feet near the edge of the coffee table, clutching a plush blue bear in his tiny hands. He was fourteen months old, healthy, vibrant, and filled with endless curiosity about the world around him.

“Come on, sweetie,” I encouraged, kneeling a few feet away on the rug, my arms open wide. “You can do it.”

Marcus sat on the sofa behind us, holding a camera, holding his breath so he wouldn't startle the baby.

Leo looked at me, his dark blue eyes shining with excitement. He let go of the coffee table with one hand, then the other, balancing on his thick, chubby legs. He took one hesitant step forward. Then another.

He stumbled slightly, but instead of falling, he lunged forward with a loud, triumphant babble and collapsed safely into my open arms.

I caught him, lifting him high into the air as he giggled wildly, his small hands patting my cheeks.

“Got it on video!” Marcus cheered, coming over to give Leo a high-five.

I pulled my son close to my chest, breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo and sunshine.

I had survived the darkest night of my life on an operating table under blinding surgical lights. I had faced the man who tried to destroy me, dismantled his authority, and built a brand new life from the ashes of a shattered marriage.

I looked at the framed photo sitting on the mantlepiece—a picture taken the day I brought Leo home from the hospital, showing my scar-covered hand holding his tiny, perfect fingers.

I was no longer just the survivor of a medical nightmare. I was a mother, a protector, and a woman who had reclaimed her own life.

“We’re going to be okay, Leo,” I whispered into his soft dark hair as he rested his head against my shoulder. “We’re going to be just fine.”

Outside the window, the sun broke through the clouds, lighting up the infinite blue horizon of the ocean ahead.
