Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The board room descended into chaos.

“This is an outrage!” Sterling shouted, slamming his hand on the table. “These are fabricated accusations!”

“They are verified chemical lab results signed by the state forensic toxicology panel,” Claire replied coldly, sliding a stack of certified documents onto the board's desk.

Dr. Vance, the head of the board, looked at Preston with pure disgust. “Dr. Pierce, did you authorize the administration of unrecorded Pitocin to your wife?”

Preston stumbled over his words, his professional composure completely shattering. “I... I relied on the medication prepared by my surgical intern! I assumed all dosages were properly logged in the electronic health records!”

“He told me to do it!” Khloe suddenly shrieked from the gallery, standing up, her hands trembling as tears streamed down her cheeks.

The room turned to stare at her.

“He told me he wanted the delivery done before the midnight shift change!” Khloe sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at Preston. “He said his wife was being difficult and that if we induced faster, she wouldn't have time to demand a C-section from the on-call surgical team! He said he didn't want Marcus Vance interfering in his department!”

“Khloe, shut up!” Preston roared, turning around in his seat, his face contorted in rage.

“Quiet! Order in this room!” Dr. Vance slammed his gavel repeatedly. “Security, secure the gallery!”

Two bailiffs moved to step between Preston and Khloe.

I sat quietly at my table, watching the man I had loved for seven years tear himself apart. There was no victory in this moment, only the grim satisfaction of truth. He had sacrificed my body, my health, and our baby’s safety on the altar of his inflated ego and petty workplace politics.

“We are taking an emergency recess,” Dr. Vance announced, his face dark with anger. “The board will deliberate immediately regarding the status of Dr. Pierce’s license and the criminal referral of both individuals to the District Attorney’s office.”

As the board members rose and exited through the rear doors, Preston turned to face me. The room was clearing out around us, reporters rushing to file their stories, lawyers whispering in tight huddles.

He walked over to my table, his steps heavy, his posture defeated.

“You destroyed me,” he said, his voice a cracked whisper. “You brought down my entire life work for revenge.”

I stood up slowly, leaning slightly on Claire’s arm to relieve the strain on my abdominal stitches. I looked him dead in his eyes, feeling nothing—no anger, no hatred, only profound emptiness.

“You destroyed yourself, Preston,” I said softly. “You thought being a doctor made you a god. You forgot that you were just a man who was supposed to protect his wife and child.”

“I loved you,” he claimed, a desperate tear slipping down his cheek.

“No,” I replied, turning my back on him. “You loved having a wife who made you look good. Now you don't have either.”
