Chapter 2 - Shadows Of Lawson Ridge

While Marcus mobilized my private security team, I spent the most nerve-wracking two hours of my life attempting to be a parent for the first time.

Ethan and Noah sat side-by-side on my leather sofa, swinging their small legs over the edge. Despite their terrifying morning, they were remarkably polite, cautious, and intensely observant. Every time I made a movement, their eyes followed me with that piercing, pale-blue gaze that felt like looking into a mirror across time.

"Are you our daddy?" Noah asked softly, holding his worn teddy bear tightly.

The word hung in the air, heavy and sharp. I had managed multi-billion-dollar corporate takeovers, negotiated with cutthroat hedge fund managers, and faced down federal auditors without flinching. But that single six-letter word made my knees weak.

I walked over and sat on the coffee table directly in front of them. "Yes, Noah. I am your daddy. And I promise you, I'm never going to let anything happen to you again."

Ethan looked at me thoughtfully. "Mommy showed us your picture every night before bed. She said you were very smart and that you loved us, even though you were far away."

A lump formed in my throat. Four years. Four years of missed birthdays, first steps, and bedtime stories. Four years where Emily had raised my boys in secret while I lived in my gilded tower, believing she had simply walked away from me.

The door to my office swung open, and Marcus stepped inside, his face pale and grim. He motioned for me to step into the hallway.

I knelt beside the boys. "I'll be right back, okay? Stay right here with Clara."

Outside in the corridor, Marcus pulled out his secure tablet and pulled up a series of surveillance stills.

"We found her, Everett," Marcus said quietly. "She was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital three hours ago under an alias."

"Is she alright?" I demanded, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"She collapsed in the lobby from severe exhaustion and acute physical stress," Marcus replied. "But that's not the worst of it. The surveillance cameras outside your building captured the vehicle that dropped Emily and the boys off."

He tapped the screen. A black, luxury SUV with tinted windows was parked across the street from Lawson Ridge Tower. The license plate was registered to a holding company I recognized all too well.

Vanguard Executive Logistics.

My blood ran cold. Vanguard was a subsidiary of Lawson Ridge—specifically controlled by the board of directors, led by my uncle, Richard Lawson.

"Richard," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "He knew."

"Four years ago, right before your father passed away and left you controlling interest in the firm, Richard was angling for the CEO seat," Marcus explained, his voice low and dangerous. "If you had a family—a wife and newborn twin sons—your position as sole heir would have been absolute under your father's trust. But if you were single, unattached, and focused solely on work, the board retained operational veto power."

"He threatened her," I said, my fists clenching until my knuckles turned white. "He made Emily believe that if she stayed with me, he would ruin her family and destroy my career."

"And when Emily realized she couldn't outrun Richard's men any longer," Marcus added, "she brought the boys to the one place Richard couldn't touch them without causing a massive public scene: your office."

I looked through the glass window at my two sons, who were currently drawing pictures on my expensive stationery with gold pens.

"Get my car," I told Marcus, my voice dropping into an icy, lethal tone. "We're going to the hospital. And then I'm going to tear Richard's world apart."
