Chapter 3 - Reunion In The Ward

Northwestern Memorial Hospital was bathed in the sterile glow of fluorescent lighting. Marcus's security team had secured the entire sixth floor, placing guards at every elevator bank and stairwell to ensure no one from Vanguard Logistics could reach room 614.
I walked down the quiet hallway holding Ethan and Noah by their hands. The small boys held on tightly, their tiny fingers wrapped around mine with absolute trust.
When I pushed open the door to room 614, the soft beep of a heart monitor filled the room.
Emily lay in the hospital bed, an IV line hooked to her arm. She looked frail, pale, and worn thin by four years of fear and hard labor. But when her dark brown eyes opened and landed on us, she looked like the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.
"Everett..." she gasped, her voice raspy.
"Mommy!" Ethan and Noah cried out, letting go of my hands and scrambling up onto the edge of her bed.
Emily pulled them into her arms, weeping openly as she kissed their foreheads, checking every inch of them to ensure they were safe. "Oh, thank God... thank God you're safe."
I stood at the foot of the bed, tears burning in my eyes as I watched the family I had been robbed of for four long years.
"Emily," I said softly.
She looked up at me, fear and hope warring in her eyes. "Everett... I'm so sorry. I didn't want to leave. Richard came to my apartment four years ago... he showed me photos of you, of my parents... he said he would destroy your father's legacy and ensure you were stripped of everything if I didn't disappear."
I walked to the side of the bed, reached down, and took her cold hand in mine.
"You don't ever have to apologize to me, Emily," I whispered, kissing the back of her hand. "You kept our boys safe. You survived. That's all that matters."
"He found us three weeks ago in Wisconsin," Emily said, her body trembling. "We were moving from town to town, but his men were closing in. I knew if they caught us, he would separate me from the boys forever. I had no choice left. I had to bring them to you."
"They're safe now," I said, looking into her eyes with an intensity that left no room for doubt. "You're safe. Richard Lawson is done."
"Everett, he controls the board," Emily warned. "He has political connections, lawyers, security teams—"
"He has money and influence," I interrupted, leaning down to press my forehead gently against hers. "But I have something he will never understand. I have a family to fight for."
I turned to Marcus, who was standing by the door. "Marcus, transfer Emily to my private estate in Lake Forest under full armed guard. Get the best physicians, nurses, and staff in the state. No one enters that gate without my personal authorization."
"Consider it done, boss," Marcus nodded.

I looked down at Ethan and Noah, who were watching us with wide, curious eyes.
"Come on, boys," I said with a warm smile. "Let's go home."
