Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Tower

The corporate headquarters of Sterling Enterprises towered sixty stories above the city’s financial district, a monolith of glass and steel that dictated the economic heartbeat of the region. At 9:00 AM sharp the following morning, Arthur Sterling walked through the marble lobby, his posture rigid and his expression unreadable.

Beside him walked Marcus, his chief security investigator, carrying a slim leather briefcase containing the preliminary forensic accounting findings.

"Vance didn't even try to hide it well," Marcus murmured quietly as they stepped into the private executive elevator. "He assumed because you were grieving your wife's death, you’d just sign off on the insurance settlement without looking at the structural reports. He siphoned four million dollars from the Warehouse 4 construction budget by approving cheap, non-grade steel from an uncertified offshore supplier. When the roof gave way under the heavy snowfall, he panicked and fabricated the entire dossier blaming Thomas Miller for taking bribes."

Arthur’s hands clenched into tight fists inside his pockets. "And the insurance money for the Miller family?"

"Vance redirected the liability payout into a shell company he controls in the Cayman Islands. He literally stole the dead man's pension and left his kids to rot on the street."

The elevator dinged, opening onto the top-floor executive suite. Glass doors opened to an expansive corner office where Richard Vance, a sleek man in a five-thousand-dollar suit with slicked-back hair, was reviewing quarterly revenue projections.

"Arthur!" Vance exclaimed, rising from his desk with a practiced, warm smile. "I was worried about you yesterday. You canceled the investor call out of nowhere. Is everything alright with the estate?"

Arthur walked into the room, stopping directly in front of Vance's desk. He didn't offer a handshake. He didn't return the smile.

"I met Thomas Miller’s children yesterday, Richard," Arthur said, his voice dangerously quiet.

Vance’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickering with a sudden, instinctual panic before he smoothed his expression back into one of somber concern.

"Thomas Miller? The technician from the warehouse collapse?" Vance sighed heavily, shaking his head. "Ah, Arthur... that was a tragic business. I know how much that incident weighed on you. But the man was corrupt. We proved he compromised structural integrity for quick cash—"

SLAM.

Arthur struck the mahogany desk with his flat palm, the sound echoing through the office like a gunshot. Vance flinched backward.

"Do not speak his name with that filthy mouth," Arthur snarled, leaning over the desk, his eyes burning with a terrifying rage. "I have the metallurgical reports from the wreckage, Vance. I have the wire transfers to your shell corporation in Grand Cayman. I know you bought cheap, rusted steel and let six hundred tons of concrete crush an innocent couple, and then you framed him to cover your theft!"

Vance turned pale, stepping back until his spine hit the glass window frame behind him. His composure completely shattered.

"Arthur, wait... listen to me," Vance stammered, his sweat breaking out along his hairline. "It was an operational miscalculation! The supplier lied to us about the stress tolerances! If the story got out that Sterling Enterprise used illegal materials, our stock value would have plunged by forty percent! I did it to save the company, Arthur! I did it to save you!"

"You did it to enrich yourself," Arthur spat, gesturing to Marcus, who stepped forward and opened the leather briefcase, revealing several stacks of binding legal documents and a voice recorder. "You stole from a dead man’s orphaned children. You left a seven-year-old girl to clean car windows on 5th Street just so her brother wouldn't starve to death!"

Vance looked at the briefcase, then at Arthur, realizing the trap had closed around him entirely. "What... what are you going to do?"

"You are going to sign over every asset you own—your shares in this company, your properties, your personal wealth—into an irrevocable trust for Madison, Lily, and Jack Miller," Arthur commanded, his voice cold and unwavering. "And then, Richard, you are going to walk out of this building in handcuffs and spend the rest of your pathetic life in a federal penitentiary."
