Chapter 7 - The Trial of Evidence

The morning of the preliminary hearing arrived with an ominous, overcast sky. The federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers. The scandal surrounding Sterling Enterprises and the arrest of high-profile executive Richard Vance had become the city's biggest news story.
Arthur insisted on taking Madison with him to the courthouse, not to subject her to the media circus, but because the family judge handling the guardianship and estate restitution requested her presence in chambers.
Inside the judge's private office, away from the roaring crowds, Judge Evelyn Carter sat behind a massive oak desk, reviewing the thick stack of financial records and corporate documents Arthur had submitted. Madison sat quietly in a leather chair beside Arthur, her legs dangling several inches above the polished floor.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Carter began, her tone formal but warm. "The evidence you've provided regarding Mr. Vance’s embezzlement and the systemic cover-up of the Warehouse 4 disaster is overwhelming. The state prosecutor's office has already frozen all accounts associated with Apex Metals and Mr. Vance's offshore entities."
"And the restitution?" Arthur asked firmly.
"The court is approving the immediate transfer of twelve million dollars from those seized assets into a permanent trust fund for Madison, Lily, and Jack Miller," Judge Carter announced. "It will cover their full living expenses, private education, healthcare, and provide substantial capital for them when they reach adulthood."
Madison gasped, looking at Arthur with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Twelve million?" she whispered. "Is that... is that enough to buy milk?"
Judge Carter couldn't help but smile, a tender expression softening her stern face. "It's enough to buy all the milk in the world, sweet pea. And a home, and a future."
However, the legal victory was abruptly interrupted when the chamber door swung open. A bailiff rushed in, looking pale and flustered.
"Your Honor," the bailiff reported hastily. "Richard Vance's defense team just filed an emergency injunction. They are claiming that Mr. Sterling's custody of the children is unauthorized and that the kids should be placed in state foster care until the criminal trial concludes."
Arthur stood up instantly, his presence towering over the room. "That's absurd! The state foster system is overburdened, and those children have already suffered enough trauma!"
"Vance’s lawyers are arguing that you have a conflict of interest as the CEO of the company liable for their parents' death," Judge Carter explained, her brow furrowing with deep concern. "Technically, under state law, until formal adoption or legal guardianship is processed, the Department of Child and Family Services has temporary jurisdiction over orphaned minors without surviving immediate family."
Madison’s heart sank into her stomach. The memory of the cold, chaotic city shelter rushed back to overwhelm her. "No!" she cried out, grabbing Arthur’s hand with both of hers. "Please don't send us away! Don't let them take us!"
Arthur squeezed her hand tightly, looking directly at the judge. "Then grant me temporary emergency legal guardianship today, Your Honor. Right now."
Judge Carter looked at Arthur, then down at Madison, who was clinging to the billionaire’s arm as if he were her only lifeline in a raging storm.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Carter said slowly. "Granting temporary guardianship to a single individual with no biological relation requires an expedited background review and a home home-inspection evaluation. I can schedule it for next week, but until then—"
"I don't need a week," Arthur interrupted, his tone resolute. "I will sign whatever indemnity bonds you require. I will pay for round-the-clock court-appointed monitors to reside at my estate. But I will not allow these children to spend one single night in a state institution."
