Chapter 3 - The Vault and the Truth

The collision was brutal.
We hit the wet concrete floor hard, sliding through the cold water. Marcus swung the butt of his submachine gun toward my jaw, grazing my cheek and drawing blood. I ignored the blinding pain, grabbing his gun wrist and slamming it repeatedly against the concrete until the weapon clattered out of his grip and slid under a parked delivery van.
Marcus scrambled for a tactical knife at his belt, drawing a six-inch serrated blade. He lunged at my chest with a vicious upward thrust.
I rolled to the side, the blade tearing through my expensive Italian suit jacket. I grabbed a heavy iron pipe hanging low from the wall, pulling myself up with explosive force, and swung my forearm straight into Marcus's throat.
He gagged, dropping the knife as he clutched his throat, gasping for air. I followed up with a heavy right hook directly to his temple, knocking him unconscious onto the wet pavement.
I stood up, breathing heavily, blood dripping from the cut on my cheek onto my wet white shirt.
"Daddy!" Liam called out from behind a concrete pillar.
I turned quickly. Both boys were huddled under the dry overhang of a utility truck, watching me with wide, terrified eyes.
"I'm okay, boys!" I called out, wiping the blood from my face. "Stay right there!"
I ran over to Marcus’s unconscious body, searched his tactical vest, and found a heavy ring of electronic security keycards and a high-caliber pistol. I tucked the gun into my belt, grabbed the keycards, and sprinted toward the heavy steel door of the electrical control vault at the back of the basement.
The heavy iron door was fitted with a high-security digital keypad. I swiped Marcus's master keycard through the scanner.
The electronic lock beeped green with a loud CLICK.
I shoved the heavy iron door open.
Inside, illuminated by a single flickering overhead bulb, was a small, windowless concrete room filled with high-voltage electrical panels.
Bound to a wooden chair in the center of the room, her hands tied behind her back with heavy plastic cable ties, was Emma.
Her dark curls were matted with sweat, her face bruised near her cheekbone, her clothes torn and covered in dust. But her eyes—those bright, fierce green eyes—were alive with an invincible, burning spirit.
"Jason?" she gasped, her voice trembling in utter disbelief as she raised her head.
"Emma," I breathed, dropping to my knees beside her.
I pulled the tactical knife I had confiscated from Marcus and quickly sliced through the thick plastic cable ties binding her wrists and ankles.
The moment her hands were free, Emma threw her arms around my neck, burying her face into my wet shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Jason... oh God, Jason... you came..." she wept, her small body shaking violently against mine. "The boys... where are my babies? Did Richard get them? Tell me they're safe!"
I pulled back, holding her face in my hands, kissing her forehead gently. "They're safe, Emma. They're right outside in the hallway. They led me right to you."
Tears streamed down her bruised cheeks as she looked into my eyes. "I'm so sorry, Jason... I am so sorry I didn't tell you about them five years ago... Your uncle threatened to destroy everything—"
"I know, Emma," I interrupted softly, wiping a tear from her cheek with my thumb. "I read your letter. My uncle lied to both of us. He built his entire fortune on destroying our lives. But it ends today. I promise you, it ends today."
I helped her stand up. She was weak and unsteady on her feet, but she held onto my arm as we walked out of the dark electrical vault back into the subterranean garage.
The second we stepped out into the open space, two tiny voices echoed across the concrete hall:
"MOMMY!"
Liam and Lucas came running out from behind the utility truck, their small sneakers splashing through the shallow puddles of water on the floor.
Emma dropped to her knees on the wet concrete, opening her arms wide. The two boys slammed into her chest, wrapping their arms around her neck, all three of them crying and laughing in a beautiful, chaotic release of pure love.
"My babies... my sweet, beautiful boys..." Emma sobbed, kissing their faces, their hair, their hands over and over. "I missed you so much... Mommy's here... Mommy's here..."
I stood above them, keeping my hand near the pistol tucked in my belt, watching my family reunited in the middle of a cold, wet basement. For the first time in thirty-eight years, the cold, empty void inside my chest vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, roaring fire of purpose.
I didn't care about Miller Meridian Capital. I didn't care about my reputation, my wealth, or my corner office.
I was a father. And I would tear down the world to keep them safe.
Suddenly, the heavy steel security doors at the top of the basement ramp slammed open with a deafening bang.
Glaring headlights cut through the darkness as three dark sedan vehicles came roaring down the concrete ramp, blocking the garage exit completely.
Stepping out of the lead vehicle, flanked by four heavily armed private guards, was my uncle, Richard Miller.

He wore his tailored three-piece charcoal suit, a silver skull-head walking cane in his right hand, his face twisted into an expression of arrogant, murderous absolute power.
"How touching," Richard sneered, his voice echoing menacingly through the subterranean garage. "The tragic little family reunited at last."
