Chapter 4 - The Showdown in the Dark

I stepped directly in front of Emma, Liam, and Lucas, pulling my weapon from my belt and aiming it straight at my uncle's chest.

"Stay back, Richard," I commanded, my voice cold and lethal.

Richard didn't even flinch. He leaned casually on his silver walking cane, a cruel, condescending smile playing on his lips.

"Put the toy away, Jason," Richard said smoothly. "You're an investment banker, not a soldier. Look around you. You're outmanned, outgunned, and completely trapped in the basement of my building."

"This isn't your building, Richard," I said, my finger hovering over the trigger. "The federal marshals are already on their way. Claire turned over the initial audit files to the District Attorney ten minutes ago."

Richard laughed—a dark, echoing laugh that chilled the damp air. "Dear sweet Claire... she was arrested in the lobby five minutes ago for corporate espionage and destruction of property. Her little fire alarm trick didn't save you, Jason. It merely cleared the building of witnesses."

Emma stepped up beside me, holding Liam and Lucas tightly behind her back. "The master flash drive is already in the hands of the State Attorney General, Richard! You can't cover this up! Every single shell company account in the Caymans is linked directly to your private signature!"

Richard’s eyes narrowed, his arrogant smile flickering for a brief fraction of a second before returning with vicious intensity.

"A signature can be forged, Emma," Richard said softly. "Especially when the person whose signature was used dies in a tragic murder-suicide in a parking garage."

He raised his left hand, giving a simple, cold signal to his armed men. "Kill the banker and the girl. Bring the children to my car."

Four armed guards raised their silenced weapons, stepping forward through the water.

"NOW, MARCUS!" I roared at the top of my lungs.

From the dark shadow behind Richard's lead sedan, a heavy iron utility crane—used for lifting heavy generator engines—swung wildly across the garage floor.

Marcus Vance, who had regained consciousness and chosen his daughter's future over a corrupt employer's bribe, was at the controls of the heavy machinery.

The massive iron hook of the crane slammed violently into the side of Richard’s lead sedan, flipping the two-ton vehicle onto its side with a deafening, metallic explosion of glass and crushed steel!

The impact threw Richard’s guards into absolute chaos. Two were crushed beneath the tumbling vehicle; the other two scattered, firing blindly into the dark spray of the overhead fire sprinklers.

"RUN!" I screamed, grabbing Emma's hand while Emma grabbed the boys.

We sprinted through the blinding spray of water toward the east service stairwell.

Behind us, gunshots echoed through the subterranean garage—STAT! STAT! STAT!—as bullets ricocheted wildly off the concrete pillars and metal utility pipes. Steam roared out of a severed heating line, filling the dark garage with a thick, blinding cloud of white vapor.

Richard’s furious voice screamed through the white mist: "DON'T LET THEM GET TO THE STREET! KILL THEM ALL!"

We reached the heavy fire door of the east stairwell. I shoved Emma and the boys inside, slamming the heavy iron door shut and jamming a steel crowbar through the door handles to lock it from the inside.

"Up!" I ordered, my lungs burning as we began sprinting up the concrete stairs. "We take the ground floor lobby exit!"

We scrambled up three flights of concrete stairs, reaching the heavy crash-bar door that led out into the main ground-floor lobby of Emerald Tower.

I slammed my body against the crash bar. The heavy door burst open.

We spilled out into the grand, glass-walled main lobby.

Standing in the center of the lobby, surrounded by twenty armed Federal Marshals and New York State Police officers with drawn weapons, was Federal District Prosecutor Katherine Stone.

"FREEZE! POLICE!" Prosecutor Stone's voice boomed through a megaphone, echoing across the massive marble lobby.

behind us, the heavy fire door we had just exited was kicked open with a violent crash.

Richard Miller rushed out into the lobby, his silver walking cane held high, his remaining armed guard right beside him with his weapon drawn.

"Shoot them—" Richard began to scream.

He froze dead in his tracks.

The red laser sight points of twenty federal tactical rifles instantly locked onto Richard Miller’s chest, face, and shoulders.

Prosecutor Katherine Stone stepped forward, pulling a high-court federal arrest warrant from her dark trench coat.

"Richard Miller," Prosecutor Stone declared, her voice cold, precise, and absolute. "You are under arrest for federal money laundering, corporate fraud, extortion, kidnapping, and attempted murder."

Richard stood frozen in the center of the grand marble lobby he had spent forty years trying to control. His silver cane fell from his trembling hands, clattering noisily against the polished floor.

He looked over at me—at the nephew he had manipulated, lied to, and tried to destroy.

I walked toward him, stopping five feet away. I pulled the Manila envelope from my coat pocket and dropped it onto the cold floor at his feet.

"Your perfect life is over, Uncle Richard," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent lobby. "And mine is just beginning."

Two federal marshals grabbed Richard’s arms, forcing him down onto his knees and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
