PART 2: The Children He Never Held

Michael arrived at the shelter before sunrise.
He didn’t bring lawyers.
He didn’t bring security.
He didn’t bring anyone.
For the first time in his life, Michael Carter walked into a place without his money protecting him.
The building was small.
Old.
Quiet.
A volunteer pointed toward a room.
“She’s there.”
Michael stopped outside the door.
His heart was pounding.
Because behind that door was the woman he lost.
The woman he never stopped loving.
But the person who opened the door was not Emily.
It was a little girl.
No.
Not a girl.
A baby.
A tiny face.
His face.
Michael froze.
The baby stared at him.
And somehow, he recognized himself.
A few seconds later, a weak voice came from inside.
“Who is it?”
Michael stepped forward.
“Emily…”
The room went silent.
She appeared holding the other baby.
Her face changed instantly.
Fear.
Pain.
Then disbelief.
“What are you doing here?”
Michael couldn’t speak.
Because seeing her like this destroyed every excuse he had.
She was thinner.
Paler.
But still Emily.
Still the woman who loved him.
“I know.”
Her expression hardened.
“You know what?”
He swallowed.
“Everything.”
She laughed softly.
Not happily.
Painfully.
“Finally.”
That one word hurt more than anger.
Michael looked at the babies.
“Our children?”
Emily looked down.
“Yes.”
He stepped closer.
But she moved back.
Not afraid.
Protective.
“You don’t get to walk back in.”
Michael nodded.
“I know.”
“You left.”
“I know.”
“You believed her.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
For a moment, Emily said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Do you know what hurt the most?”
Michael looked at her.
“I wasn’t angry that you believed Ashley.”
Her voice broke.
“I was angry that you didn’t even ask if I was okay.”
That destroyed him.
Because she was right.
He had wanted justice.
But he never wanted the truth.
He wanted someone to blame.
And he chose her.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily looked away.
“Sorry doesn’t fix a year.”
“No.”
Michael looked at the babies.
“But maybe I can spend the rest of my life trying.”
Before Emily answered, the door opened.
David walked in.
His face was tense.
“We have a problem.”
Michael turned.
“What?”
David looked at Emily.
“Ashley knows.”
Emily’s face went pale.
“How?”
“She tracked the investigation.”
Michael immediately understood.
She wasn’t going to let go.
Not after everything she had done.
David continued.
“She filed emergency custody papers.”
The room froze.

Emily held the babies tighter.
“She can’t.”
Michael stepped forward.
“No.”
His voice changed.
Cold.
Controlled.
“She can’t take them.”
David looked at him.
“Then you need to prove everything.”
Michael nodded.
“Then we will.”
