PART 2: THE SECRET THE DOG WAS CARRYING

The Labrador refused to leave the hospital.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

Even after the little girl was taken into the emergency room, even after doctors covered her with warm blankets and connected monitors to her tiny body, the dog stayed exactly where he was.

Beside her.

Like a silent guardian.

The nurses had tried to move him.

Only once.

A young assistant named Lily carefully approached.

"Come on, buddy. You need to rest too."

The Labrador looked at her.

His eyes were exhausted.

His body was shaking from cold and stress.

But when Lily reached toward the door, he stood immediately.

Not aggressively.

Just firmly.

No.

Not until the girl was safe.

Emma watched from the hallway.

She understood something then.

This dog wasn't waiting for his owner.

He was waiting for the child.

And that changed everything.

The doctor finally stepped out of the treatment room.

Everyone turned.

"How is she?"

The doctor removed his glasses.

"She's stable."

A wave of relief moved through the room.

"But she's severely dehydrated, hypothermic, and exhausted."

He looked at the dog.

"Whoever brought her here saved her life."

The police detective, Daniel Harris, opened his notebook.

"Do we know who she is?"

The doctor shook his head.

"No identification. No phone. Nothing."

Emma looked at the Labrador.

The dog stared through the glass window at the little girl.

Almost as if he was listening.

"Maybe he knows," Emma said.

Detective Harris raised an eyebrow.

"The dog?"

Emma nodded.

"Look at him."

The detective did.

And for the first time, he stopped seeing an animal.

He saw a witness.

The dog's collar was examined.

There was a name.

"Buddy."

A phone number.

Old.

Disconnected.

No address.

No owner information.

Nothing useful.

But attached to the collar was something else.

A small metal tag.

Almost hidden.

It had one word engraved on it.

"LUNA."

Emma frowned.

"That's not the dog's name."

"No," Harris said.

"It's not."

The room went quiet.

Because if Luna wasn't the dog's name...

Then who was Luna?

A nurse suddenly appeared from the pediatric room.

"Emma?"

She turned.

"The girl woke up."

Everyone moved.

Including Buddy.

The Labrador immediately stood and followed.

Inside the room, the little girl looked tiny beneath the hospital blankets.

Her eyes slowly opened.

She looked around.

Confused.

Afraid.

Then she saw Buddy.

And everything changed.

Her face softened.

"Buddy..."

The dog made a quiet sound.

Almost like a cry.

He moved closer but stopped at the edge of the bed.

Waiting.

The little girl lifted her weak hand.

"Come here."

Buddy carefully placed his head beside her fingers.

And for the first time that night...

He relaxed.

Emma watched.

The connection between them was impossible to ignore.

"You know him?"

The girl's eyes moved to Emma.

She looked scared.

Not of the nurse.

Of the question.

"What's your name, sweetheart?"

A long pause.

Then:

"Luna."

Emma froze.

She looked at the metal tag.

LUNA.

The detective immediately stepped closer.

"Luna, where are your parents?"

The girl's expression changed.

The warmth disappeared.

Fear returned.

"Mommy..."

Her voice cracked.

"Where is Mommy?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

The detective lowered himself.

"Can you tell us what happened?"

Luna looked at Buddy.

The dog watched her carefully.

Like he was encouraging her.

Then she whispered:

"We were running."

"From who?"

She looked toward the window.

Toward the storm outside.

"From the bad man."

The room became silent.

"What bad man?"

Luna squeezed Buddy's fur.

"He found us."

Emma felt her stomach drop.

"Who found you?"

The little girl started crying.

"He took Mommy."

The sentence changed everything.

Because this was no longer a lost child caught in a storm.

This was something else.

A crime.

Detective Harris immediately stepped outside.

He started making calls.

Missing persons.

Reports.

Search records.

Anything connected to a woman and a child named Luna.

Within an hour, they found something.

A missing person report.

A woman named Sarah Miller.

Thirty-one years old.

Reported missing three days earlier.

Her daughter:

Luna Miller.

Five years old.

The same child lying in the hospital bed.

Emma looked through the glass.

At the little girl.

At Buddy.

At the animal who had crossed a city in a storm to bring her to safety.

And she realized something terrifying.

Buddy hadn't found Luna by accident.

He had been looking for help.

The detective returned.

His face was serious.

"There's more."

Emma turned.

"What?"

Harris held up a photo.

It showed a man.

Middle-aged.

Dark jacket.

Cold expression.

"This man was seen near Sarah's home the night she disappeared."

Emma looked at the photo.

Then at Luna.

Then back.

"Who is he?"

Harris hesitated.

"Her ex-husband."

The room went still.

"And the worst part?"

Emma waited.

"He was released from custody last month after violating a restraining order."

A chill moved through the room.

Not from the storm.

From the truth.

The man who had taken Sarah was still out there.

And if he knew Luna survived...

He would come looking.

As if sensing the danger, Buddy suddenly lifted his head.

His ears pointed toward the hallway.

A low growl escaped his throat.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the end of the corridor.

Watching.

Emma's blood ran cold.

Because the man's eyes were not looking at the nurses.

Not the doctors.

Not the police.

May you like

They were locked on Luna.

And he smiled.
