PART 3: THE MAN WHO CAME LOOKING FOR HER

The smile was the first thing Emma noticed.

Not anger.

Not panic.

Not fear.

A smile.

The kind of smile that didn't belong in a hospital hallway.

The kind of smile that made her body react before her mind could.

Danger.

The stranger stood beneath the fluorescent lights with his hands inside his jacket pockets.

Calm.

Too calm.

Everyone else in the hallway was moving.

Doctors walking.

Nurses carrying supplies.

Machines beeping.

But he stood completely still.

Watching.

Watching Luna.

Buddy noticed him too.

The Labrador immediately moved between the man and the hospital room.

His body became rigid.

His fur rose along his back.

A low growl came from his chest.

Not the scared bark from earlier.

A warning.

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Sir."

The man looked away from Luna and toward the detective.

"Can I help you?"

His voice was smooth.

Almost polite.

Too polite.

Harris didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he studied him.

"Name?"

The man smiled.

"Michael Miller."

Emma felt her heart sink.

Luna's father.

The man from the photograph.

Michael looked toward the hospital room.

"My daughter."

The words sounded rehearsed.

Like he had practiced them.

"I've been looking everywhere."

Nobody moved.

Emma watched Luna.

The little girl's face had changed.

The moment she heard his voice, she hid beneath the blanket.

Her tiny hands grabbed Buddy's fur.

"No."

The whisper was barely audible.

But everyone heard it.

"No, Buddy."

Michael's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Emma saw it.

The smile disappeared.

For one second, something colder appeared.

Then it was gone.

Detective Harris noticed too.

"You need to step back."

Michael looked surprised.

"Excuse me?"

"Step away from the room."

"I'm her father."

"That doesn't mean you can walk in here."

Michael laughed softly.

A fake laugh.

The kind people use when they think they're dealing with someone beneath them.

"This is ridiculous."

He looked at Emma.

"You don't understand."

Emma said nothing.

Because she did understand one thing.

Luna was terrified of him.

And children are many things.

But they don't usually fear the person who protects them.

A nurse quietly entered the room.

"Emma?"

She nodded.

"Take Luna somewhere else."

The nurse understood immediately.

Within seconds, staff began moving Luna to another room.

Buddy followed.

Michael watched.

His face became darker.

"Where are you taking my daughter?"

No one answered.

That made him angry.

Then he made his mistake.

He stepped forward.

Toward Luna.

Buddy reacted instantly.

The Labrador jumped between them.

A loud bark echoed through the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Michael stared at the dog.

"You."

His voice changed.

"You ruined everything."

Emma felt a chill.

Because that wasn't the voice of a father.

That was the voice of someone who had lost control.

Detective Harris moved closer.

"What did you say?"

Michael realized his mistake.

Immediately, the mask returned.

"I mean... the dog scared her."

But it was too late.

Everyone had heard him.

The police took Michael aside for questioning.

He tried to explain.

He tried to manipulate.

He tried every trick people use when they think they're smarter than everyone else.

But this time, he didn't control the situation.

Because Luna was alive.

And Buddy was there.

Hours later, investigators searched Michael's car.

They found something.

A small bag.

Inside:

Children's clothing.

A phone.

And a photograph.

The photograph was of Sarah.

Luna's mother.

Taken after she disappeared.

Emma stared at the image.

"He's been following her."

Harris nodded.

"Yes."

Then they found the second piece of evidence.

A note.

Short.

Handwritten.

Three words.

"Find the dog."

Everyone looked at Buddy.

Suddenly, the Labrador made sense.

Michael wasn't only searching for Luna.

He was searching for the one witness who knew what happened.

The one thing he couldn't control.

The question became:

How did Buddy escape?

And where was Sarah?

The police searched the route Buddy had likely taken.

They followed his movements through the storm.

Security cameras.

Traffic cameras.

Store cameras.

And finally...

They found something.

A video from a gas station.

Rain pouring down.

A frightened dog running through the street.

A few minutes later...

A woman appeared.

Barely walking.

Holding onto a wall.

Sarah.

Emma covered her mouth.

"She's alive?"

Harris nodded slowly.

"Looks like it."

The video showed Sarah looking around.

Then she saw Buddy.

She grabbed his collar.

She whispered something.

The camera couldn't capture the sound.

But investigators enhanced the audio.

And when they heard it...

Everyone went silent.

Sarah's voice:

"Take Luna somewhere safe."

Buddy hadn't abandoned Sarah.

Sarah had sent him.

She knew she couldn't escape.

She knew she was hurt.

She knew the storm was dangerous.

But she also knew one thing.

The dog would find her daughter.

That was why Buddy ran.

Not because he was lost.

Because he had a mission.

The search for Sarah became urgent.

But then another message came in.

A phone recovered from Michael's car had received a location update.

The signal was active.

And it was moving.

Detective Harris looked at the map.

His face changed.

"He's not alone."

Emma stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

The detective pointed at the location.

"He has someone with him."

The room became silent.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

Sarah was alive.

May you like

But Michael had found her.

And now he was going back.
