Chapter 2 - The Estate and the Shadow

Hannah Carter was admitted to an ICU ward at a private hospital under Andrew's personal payroll, diagnosed with severe pneumonia and systemic exhaustion. While she fought for her life under the care of top specialists, Andrew fulfilled his promise.

He brought Sophie, Mason, and Noah to his sprawling, highly fortified estate on the outskirts of Lake Michigan.

The Whitaker mansion was a fortress of concrete, steel, bulletproof glass, and armed guards. It had seen many things over the decades—high-stakes mob summits, secret drop-offs, and intense negotiations—but it had never seen a baby crib, let alone two.

Within forty-eight hours, the sterile, silent mansion was utterly transformed.

Andrew ordered his staff to turn three guest bedrooms into a state-of-the-art nursery. Bright yellow paint replaced the dark mahogany walls; soft plush carpets were laid down over cold marble floors. Highly trained pediatric nurses were brought in around the clock, while Andrew’s sternest bodyguards found themselves carrying boxes of baby powder and assembling wooden rocking chairs.

Sophie was initially overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the estate. She walked through the grand halls in her worn sneakers, clutching a stuffed bear Andrew had bought her. But Andrew made sure she never felt lost. He cleared his dense schedule, cancelling meetings with syndicate lieutenants to eat breakfast with her in the morning room.

"Why are there men with earpieces outside my door?" Sophie asked one morning, dipping her toast into soft-boiled egg.

"They work for me," Andrew explained, sipping his black coffee. "Their only job is to make sure nothing bad ever comes near you or your brothers."

"Are you a king?" she asked innocently.

Andrew smiled dryly. "Something like that."

As weeks turned into months, Hannah’s recovery proved tragically slow. Complications arose, requiring specialized surgeries and long-term rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the children blossomed under Andrew's protective wing. Mason and Noah gained healthy weight, their cries replaced by soft giggles as Andrew learned the surprisingly delicate art of holding two infants at once. Sophie was enrolled in a prestigious private academy, driven to school each day by Marcus, who checked her homework with comical seriousness.

Andrew found a strange, profound peace he had never known. For twenty years, his life had been defined by violence, strategy, and paranoia. Now, returning home to hear Sophie playing the piano in the parlor or seeing Noah fall asleep on his chest gave him a purpose far grander than ruling the city's underworld.

Then, the peace shattered.

On a rainy Thursday morning, Andrew received an urgent summons from his legal team. An anonymous dossier had been delivered directly to the head director of Milwaukee Child Protective Services, as well as the District Attorney’s office.

Andrew opened the manila folder on his desk. Inside were high-resolution surveillance photographs.

The first photo showed Sophie entering the iron gates of the Whitaker estate.

The second depicted Andrew sitting in his sunroom, holding baby Noah while reading a financial report.

The third showed armed guards in tactical gear standing perimeter watch near Mason’s stroller in the courtyard.

The accompanying anonymous letter accused Andrew Whitaker—a known criminal figurehead—of illegally harboring, exploiting, and endangerment of three minor children without legal guardianship.

Andrew’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Find out who sent this," he ordered Marcus, his voice dangerously low. "I want the camera angles traced, the courier tracked, and the ink analyzed."

"There's one more photo in the back of the file, Boss," Marcus said, his face unusually pale. "The federal courier dropped it off separately. It wasn't meant for CPS. It was meant specifically for you."

Andrew reached into the envelope and pulled out the final photograph.

It was an old, grainy image taken at a marina. In the frame stood Hannah Carter six years ago, smiling softly. Beside her stood a tall, broad-shouldered man with a scar running across his left jaw line.

Andrew’s heart stopped beating. His blood ran cold.

The man in the photo was Julian Vance.

Julian Vance had been Andrew’s chief lieutenant, rival, and closest confidant—until eight years ago, when Julian’s car was blown to pieces on the Hoan Bridge during a bloody syndicate war. Andrew had personally attended Julian's closed-casket funeral. He had personally buried the man.

"He's dead," Andrew whispered, staring at the face of a ghost. "I stood by his grave."

"Appears he isn't, Boss," Marcus said quietly. "And look at the date stamp on the photograph."

The date stamp read: Eight months ago.

Andrew stared at the photograph, his sharp mind connecting the dots with horrifying clarity. Julian Vance was alive. Hannah Carter had been Julian’s secret partner. The four-month-old twins, Mason and Noah, were Julian Vance's biological sons.

And six-year-old Sophie hadn't wandered into that grocery store with $4.63 by pure coincidence.

She had been guided. She had been placed directly in Andrew's path.

Someone had orchestrated the entire meeting from the start.
