Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Hoan Bridge

The realization hung over the Whitaker estate like a dark thunderstorm. Andrew sat in his darkened study late into the night, staring at the photograph of Julian Vance.
If Julian was alive, why had he faked his death eight years ago? Why had he left Hannah and his children living in squalor in a dilapidated apartment on 4th Street? And why drop the children into Andrew's lap now?
"Marcus," Andrew commanded into his intercom. "Bring Gabriel to me."
Ten minutes later, Gabriel—Andrew’s head of intelligence and chief strategist—entered the room. Gabriel was a former military intelligence officer who specialized in digital forensics and dark-web tracking.
"I ran the photo through the facial recognition database, Boss," Gabriel reported, placing a tablet on the desk. "It’s 99.8% match. Julian Vance didn't die on the bridge eight years ago. The body in the car was a proxy, planted with forged dental records. Julian took forty million dollars from the syndicate's off-shore accounts that same week and vanished into Eastern Europe."
"And Hannah?" Andrew asked, his jaw tight.
"Hannah Carter was an innocent schoolteacher when she met Julian," Gabriel explained, bringing up her file. "She had no idea about his criminal identity. When he vanished eight years ago, he left her pregnant with Sophie. She thought he was dead. But eleven months ago, Julian resurfaced in Milwaukee under a false passport. He found Hannah again, got her pregnant with the twins, and then vanished a second time when the Federal Marshals closed in on his trail."
Andrew felt a cold fury rising in his chest. Julian hadn't just abandoned his family; he had used them.
"What about the anonymous package to CPS?" Andrew demanded.
"Traced back to a burner server in Chicago," Gabriel replied. "It was sent by Julian himself. He knew CPS would launch an investigation into you for harboring the children. He knew the media would print headlines linking a mob boss to abducted kids. He’s using the federal justice system to force you to surrender the children to state custody."
"Why?" Andrew frowned. "Why put his own children into state custody?"
"Because once they are in a state group home, they become easy targets," Marcus chimed in from the doorway. "Julian doesn't want the kids because he loves them. He wants them because of the Vance Family Trust."
Andrew’s eyes lit up with sudden understanding.
Eight years ago, before his alleged death, Julian’s wealthy grandfather had set up a sixty-million-dollar trust fund. The terms of the trust were absolute: if Julian died or went missing, the money could only be accessed by his legal biological heirs once they turned eighteen—or immediately by a court-appointed legal guardian if the heirs were placed in protective state custody due to parental death or abandonment.
"He wants the money," Andrew spat, disgust lacing his voice. "He needs the children in state care so he can apply as their surviving father, claim legal guardianship, wipe out the trust, and disappear forever."
"He used his six-year-old daughter," Marcus muttered angrily. "He knew you were a man of honor. He knew if Sophie approached you in public with those babies, you wouldn't turn her away. He relied on your nobility to keep them safe until he was ready to strike."
Andrew stood up slowly, walking over to the window that looked down onto the sunroom. Inside, Sophie was carefully reading a picture book to baby Mason, gently rocking his crib with her foot.
She had walked through the freezing cold with a broken stroller and $4.63, thinking she was saving her brothers. In reality, she had been a pawn in her father's monstrous game.
"He thought I was a tool to be used," Andrew said, his voice dropping into a register so dark that both Marcus and Gabriel felt a chill run down their spines. "He thought he could manipulate my honor, take his money, and destroy these children's lives."
Andrew turned back toward his men, his eyes burning with lethal intent.
"Tell the lawyers to stall CPS with every legal injunction in the book," Andrew ordered. "Deploy two extra tactical squads to Hannah’s hospital room. And Gabriel?"

"Yes, Boss?"
"Find Julian Vance. Bring him to me alive."
