Chapter 4 - The Traitor Revealed

The silence in the grand dining room was so absolute that the rain tapping against the high glass windows sounded like gunfire.
Matteo’s face didn't go pale immediately. Instead, a slow, ugly twitch developed at the corner of his left eye. He carefully set his wine glass down, the red liquid sloshing slightly against the crystal rim.
"Lorenzo," Matteo said, his voice dropping its polished charm, turning flat and cold. "Are you going to let this waitress accuse your own cousin based on her foggy memory of a traumatizing night?"
Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He slowly reached out, picked up his napkin, and dabbed the corners of his mouth. His movements were agonizingly slow, calculated to stretch the tension until it suffocated everyone in the room.
"My wife has a very sharp memory, Matteo," Lorenzo said softly. "In fact, Dr. Mercer noted that her recall during the emergency interview was remarkably precise. But what interests me more..."
Lorenzo leaned forward, placing both broad hands flat on the mahogany table.
"...is how you knew about the fake police report. Only three people in my inner circle had access to the altered autopsy files before they were delivered to the precinct."
Marco Valente’s head snapped toward Matteo, his thick white eyebrows drawing together in sudden, furious realization. "Matteo... what the hell did you do?"
Matteo realized the room had turned against him in a fraction of a second. The lieutenants sitting at the lower end of the table subtly shifted their hands toward their shoulder holsters.
"I did what had to be done for the survival of this family!" Matteo suddenly shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. "You’ve gone soft, Lorenzo! Ever since your wife died, you’ve been running this syndicate like a charity organization! You refused to expand into the docks, you refused to take the Cipriani territory, and now you’re letting an eight-year-old boy dictate your security measures!"
"So you gave the Ciprianis my son's schedule?" Lorenzo asked, his voice deathly quiet, devoid of all emotion. "You told them where Leo’s security detail would be weakest?"
"The boy was supposed to be taken hostage!" Matteo yelled, his grey eyes wild as he stood up, backing away from his chair. "A leverage point! To force you to step down and hand the commission seat to me! I told those fools not to shoot him!"
"They raised a gun to his face," Aara said, her voice trembling with rage as she stood up beside Lorenzo, ignoring the sharp stab of pain in her shoulder. "They were going to blow his head off!"
"Shut up, you miserable little girl!" Matteo spat, pulling a small silver revolver from his inner jacket pocket.
Before Matteo could even raise the barrel, three things happened simultaneously.
Franco, the head of security, drew his weapon in a blur of movement. Lorenzo stood up, shoving Aara firmly behind his broad back with one arm.
CRACK!
A single gunshot echoed through the grand dining room, shattering a crystal wall sconce near the ceiling.
Matteo gasped, dropping his silver revolver onto the carpet as Franco’s bullet tore through his shoulder. He collapsed onto his knees, clutching his bleeding arm, groaning in pain.
Two heavy-set security guards rushed through the double doors, pinning Matteo to the marble floor before he could move again.
Marco stood up, looking down at his bleeding nephew with utter disgust. "Traitorous dog," Marco growled, spitting on the floor near Matteo’s head. "To sell out your own blood..."
Lorenzo walked slowly around the mahogany table, stopping right beside the kneeling Matteo. He reached down, grabbed Matteo by his dark hair, and forced his head up so their eyes locked.
"You brought war to my house," Lorenzo whispered, his voice like iron grinding against stone. "You put my son in a gunman's sight. And you made the mistake of thinking I had gone soft."
"Lorenzo... please..." Matteo whimpered, the wild bravado completely evaporating from his face, replaced by pure, terror-stricken pleading. "We’re family... blood..."
"Blood was spilled in that diner," Lorenzo said flatly. He looked up at Franco. "Take him to the basement. I will handle him myself after I put my son to bed."
The guards dragged the screaming, sobbing Matteo out of the dining room, his expensive shoes trailing lines of blood across the white marble foyer until the heavy doors slammed shut.
The remaining men in the room stood in stunned, absolute silence.
Lorenzo turned back toward the table, his dark eyes sweeping over Marco and the lieutenants.
"Dinner is over," Lorenzo announced smoothly, as if nothing more than a spilled glass of wine had occurred. "Marco, secure the Brooklyn docks by midnight. Franco, double the perimeter guards around the estate."
"Understood, Don Lorenzo," Marco said, bowing his head slightly in a gesture of absolute submission.
As the men quickly vacated the room, Lorenzo turned to face Aara.
She was standing near her chair, her right hand clutching her bandaged shoulder, her chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly drained from her system.
Lorenzo walked over to her, stopping a foot away.
"You were extraordinary," he said softly.
Aara looked up into his dark eyes, shaking her head. "He wanted to hurt Leo. His own family."
"In my world, ambition eats blood," Lorenzo said quietly. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching her chin, lifting her face slightly. "You proved yourself tonight, Aara. You are no longer just a guest in this house. You are the lady of the Valente family."
Aara looked down at the massive diamond ring on her finger. It felt heavier now—not like a trap, but like armor forged in blood and fire.

"What happens now?" she asked softly.
"Now," Lorenzo whispered, his thumb lightly brushing across her lower lip, "the Ciprianis will realize their inside man is gone. And tomorrow, we go on the offensive."
