Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the room. His cheek was bright red from his father's slap, his hands were trembling, and his arrogant posture had completely vanished.
He looked at his father kneeling on the floor, weeping and covered in sweat. Then he looked at Uncle Jake, who stood motionless three feet away, his arms hanging loosely at his sides, his dark eyes entirely devoid of emotion.
For the first time in his pampered, privileged life, Ethan Collins realized that his family’s wealth, his father’s political connections, and his high-priced corporate lawyers were completely meaningless inside this sealed room.
"Jake..." Richard choked out, crawling forward two inches on his knees. "Please... my son is stupid. He’s an arrogant fool. He didn't know who your niece was... he didn't know—"
"He knew she was a human being," Jake said quietly.
It was the first time Jake had spoken since removing his hearing aids. His voice was low, flat, and carried a terrible, crushing weight that seemed to compress the very air in the room.
Jake reached into his canvas jacket pocket.
Ethan flinched violently, taking two steps back, his hands instinctually shooting up to protect his head.
Jake didn't pull out a weapon. He pulled out a small, black encrypted tablet and laid it gently on the stainless-steel bedside tray right beside his hearing aids.
"The file is called Operation Apex," Jake said softly, looking down at Richard. "It contains thirty-two years of your family's financial history. The illegal land acquisitions in Cook County in 1996. The bribing of the state banking commissioners in 2004. The offshore laundering accounts in Grand Cayman managed through your brother's logistics firm."
Richard’s face went from pale to completely translucent. "Where... how did you get those...?"
"You made the same mistake every arrogant rich man makes, Richard," Jake replied, his voice entirely devoid of anger. "You thought that because you paid millions to cybersecurity firms, your data was safe. You forgot that the men who built those systems learned how to build them from us."
Jake tapped the screen of the tablet twice.
"At precisely four o'clock this afternoon," Jake continued, checking the dark, heavy watch on his wrist, "a complete copy of those files was delivered to the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois."
"No..." Richard whispered, clutching his chest. "No, no, no... please..."
"By six o'clock tomorrow morning," Jake said, "every bank account, every asset, every trust, and every property registered to Collins Financial Group will be frozen under a federal emergency RICO seizure order."
Victoria let out a strangled, terrified shriek and collapsed back onto the sofa, clutching her pearls, her face twisted in pure agony.
Ethan stared at the black tablet as if it were an explosive device about to detonate. "You... you can't do this! That's our money! That's my inheritance!"
Jake turned his head slowly to look at Ethan.

The look in Jake’s eyes wasn't hatred. It was something far worse: absolute, complete indifference. It was the look a gardener gives an invasive pest before wiping it off a leaf.
"Your inheritance," Jake said softly, "is about to be spent on defense attorneys who won't be able to keep you out of a federal penitentiary."
