Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Ethan’s breathing became fast, shallow, and panicked. He looked around the room like a trapped animal searching for an open door.

He looked at his mother, who was sobbing hysterically into her silk scarf. He looked at his father, who remained crumpled on the floor in a pool of his own terror. Then he looked at me, sitting in the hospital bed, cradling our daughter against my chest.

A dark, desperate rage suddenly flashed across Ethan’s face.

"You!" Ethan screamed, lunging two steps toward my bed, his fingers clawing at the air. "You did this! You little lying bitch! You set us up!"

Before Ethan’s foot could hit the floor for a third step, Uncle Jake moved.

For a man in his sixties with a shrapnel-damaged knee, his speed was terrifying.

In a fraction of a second, Jake closed the distance between them. He didn't punch Ethan. He reached out with one calloused, iron hand, caught Ethan by the throat, and slammed him backward against the heavy oak wardrobe door near the entrance.

THUD.

The wood groaned under the force of the impact.

Ethan’s eyes bulged. His legs kicked wildly against the floor as Jake’s fingers dug into his windpipe—using the exact same grip, the exact same pressure, and the exact same technique Ethan had used on me twenty minutes earlier.

"Look at me," Jake commanded softly, his face inches from Ethan’s panicked, red face.

Ethan couldn't breathe. Air hissed uselessly through his teeth as he clawed desperately at Jake’s wrist, but Jake’s arm was like a solid bar of reinforced steel. It didn't move an inch.

"You like putting hands on women who are six hours out of delivery?" Jake asked, his voice chillingly quiet. "You like talking about obedience?"

"Jake! Stop! He’ll die!" Richard shrieked from the floor, crawling toward them, grabbing at the hem of Jake’s canvas jacket. "Please! Don't kill my son!"

"He's not going to die today, Richard," Jake said, never breaking eye contact with Ethan. "Dying is easy. Living through what comes next is the hard part."

Jake shifted his weight and tossed Ethan sideways like a sack of trash.

Ethan crashed hard onto the vinyl floor, clutching his throat, coughing violently, gasping for air while tears of pain streamed down his face.

At that exact moment, three sharp, rhythmic knocks echoed against the heavy wooden door of the hospital suite.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

The room went dead silent again.

"Chicago Police Department," a loud, authoritative voice called out from the hallway. "Open the door."
