PART 2: THE SECRET SHE WAS RUNNING FROM

Alexander Vale stared at the photograph in his hand.

For the first time in years…

He felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

The woman who had accidentally entered his car wasn’t just a tired doctor.

She wasn’t just someone who worked long shifts and forgot where she parked.

There was a reason someone had hidden this photograph.

And there was a reason it was inside Olivia Carter’s bag.

He looked at the picture again.

Olivia.

A little boy.

And the man standing beside them.

Daniel Carter.

His own brother.

The man who had disappeared eight years ago.

The man everyone believed was dead.

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

Impossible.

He had attended Daniel’s funeral.

He had watched the casket lowered into the ground.

He had spent years believing his younger brother was gone.

So why was there a picture of him with Olivia?

And who was the child?

Marcus noticed his silence.

The driver glanced through the mirror.

“Sir?”

Alexander didn’t respond.

“Sir?”

Finally, Alexander looked up.

“Find everything about Olivia Carter.”

Marcus was surprised.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Personal?”

Alexander hesitated.

Normally, he would never ask.

He respected privacy.

He built his company on knowing information, not stealing it.

But this was different.

“I need to know if she’s in danger.”

Marcus studied him.

For twenty-two years, he had worked for Alexander.

He had seen him negotiate billion-dollar deals.

He had seen him destroy competitors without raising his voice.

But he had never seen him worried about a stranger.

“I’ll handle it.”

Meanwhile…

Olivia had no idea what she had just walked into.

She was standing outside her apartment building, still embarrassed.

She looked at the street.

Then at the empty space where her car should have been.

“Oh no.”

She closed her eyes.

Of course.

Of course tonight would be the night she made the biggest mistake of her life.

She checked her phone.

Three missed calls.

All from the hospital.

She sighed.

Then remembered.

The medication.

The patient report.

Her exhaustion.

Everything hit her at once.

She walked upstairs.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Trying not to wake her neighbor.

When she opened her apartment door…

Something felt wrong.

Not obvious.

Just wrong.

Olivia stopped.

Her instincts, trained by years in emergency rooms, immediately woke up.

The apartment was quiet.

Too quiet.

She reached for the light.

Then froze.

The lamp was already on.

Someone had been inside.

Her heart started racing.

“Hello?”

No answer.

She stepped backward.

Slowly.

Then she saw it.

On the kitchen table.

A white envelope.

Her name written on it.

Olivia Carter.

Her hands shook.

She didn’t touch it.

Not immediately.

Because she knew.

Normal people received letters.

People like her received warnings.

Finally, she opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

Another photograph.

The same man.

Daniel.

But this time…

He wasn’t smiling.

He was standing with another man.

A dangerous-looking man.

And underneath the picture were three words:

STOP LOOKING.

Olivia’s breathing became shallow.

She dropped the photo.

Because she understood.

Someone knew.

Someone knew about Daniel.

Someone knew about the past she buried.

A sound came from behind her.

A floorboard.

She turned.

A shadow moved in the hallway.

Olivia grabbed the nearest object.

A lamp.

She wasn’t a fighter.

But she had spent years saving people.

She knew how to stay alive.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

“Olivia.”

Her blood froze.

Because she recognized it.

“Daniel?”

The shadow stepped forward.

And for one impossible moment…

She thought she was dreaming.

The man standing in front of her was older.

Different.

But alive.

Her hands dropped.

The lamp almost fell.

“No…”

Her voice broke.

“You’re dead.”

Daniel looked at her.

Pain filled his eyes.

“I know.”

A tear escaped her before she could stop it.

“You’re alive.”

He nodded.

“But you can’t know I am.”

Olivia stared.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Olivia, you need to leave.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

“No!”

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t get to disappear for eight years and come back telling me what to do.”

Daniel looked away.

Because she was right.

“You left me alone.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“It was the only way.”

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“The only way for who?”

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“For you.”

Before she could answer…

The lights went out.

Both of them froze.

Daniel immediately changed.

The fear on his face disappeared.

Only alertness remained.

“Someone followed me.”

Olivia stepped back.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“The people who killed my old life.”

A noise came from outside.

Glass.

A window cracking.

Daniel moved instantly.

He grabbed Olivia and pulled her down.

The sound of something hitting the wall echoed.

Olivia covered her ears.

“What was that?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked toward the window.

A bullet hole.

Her apartment wall.

Someone had just tried to kill them.

Olivia stared.

Her hands started shaking.

“This is why you came?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“This is why I stayed away.”

Across the city…

Alexander sat in his office.

The lights of New York reflected against the glass walls.

He hated waiting.

But he hated not knowing more.

His assistant placed a file on the desk.

“Olivia Carter.”

Alexander opened it.

Emergency nurse.

No criminal history.

No unusual activity.

Single mother.

One child.

His eyes stopped.

Child.

He turned the page.

A photo.

A little boy.

Six years old.

Same eyes as Daniel.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“His name?”

“Ethan Carter.”

Silence.

The room felt colder.

His assistant continued.

“There’s more.”

Alexander looked up.

“What?”

“We found something about her apartment.”

“Someone broke in tonight.”

Alexander stood immediately.

“What?”

“Security cameras caught a man entering.”

“Who?”

The assistant hesitated.

“We don’t know.”

Alexander’s eyes darkened.

“Find out.”

“We’re trying.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Find out now.”

Because suddenly…

This was no longer curiosity.

It was protection.

He didn’t understand why.

He barely knew Olivia Carter.

But he knew one thing.

Someone had threatened her.

And nobody threatened someone under his watch.

At Olivia’s apartment…

Daniel looked out the broken window.

“They know where you are.”

Olivia held herself.

“What did you bring into my life?”

Daniel looked at her.

A painful expression crossed his face.

“I brought the truth.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t want your truth.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You deserve it.”

Before Olivia could answer…

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Both of them looked at it.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Don’t answer.”

Olivia stared.

“Why?”

“Because they want to know if you’re alive.”

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a voicemail appeared.

Olivia pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“Olivia Carter.”

A pause.

“We know you found him.”

Her face went pale.

The voice continued:

“Give us Daniel.”

Another pause.

“Or we take your son.”

The message ended.

The room became silent.

Olivia couldn’t breathe.

Because there was one thing nobody could threaten.

Her child.

Daniel looked at her.

And saw the change.

The fear disappeared.

A mother’s strength replaced it.

“Where is Ethan?”

She whispered.

Then louder:

“Where is my son?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

The danger had already begun.

And somewhere in the city…

Alexander Vale was moving.

May you like

Because the woman who entered his car by mistake…

Had just become the one person he was determined to protect.
