PART 3: THE BILLIONAIRE WHO CHOSE TO PROTECT HER

Olivia stood frozen in the middle of her apartment.

The voicemail was still playing in her mind.

Give us Daniel.

Or we take your son.

Those words were worse than the sound of the bullet.

Worse than seeing a man she thought was dead standing in front of her.

Because Olivia understood fear.

She saw it every day.

In hospital rooms.

In emergency calls.

In the faces of people who had seconds to make impossible decisions.

But nothing prepared her for someone threatening Ethan.

Her son.

Her whole world.

“Where is he?”

Her voice was shaking.

Daniel looked at her.

“Olivia…”

“Where is my son?”

This time she shouted.

Daniel stepped closer.

“He’s safe.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I checked.”

She stared at him.

“You checked?”

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You were watching us?”

Daniel looked away.

“I had to.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t get to say that.”

Her voice broke.

“You disappeared for eight years.”

“You let me cry over you.”

“You let me raise our son thinking he would never know his father.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was obvious.

But Olivia didn’t stop.

“I buried you.”

A tear fell.

“I visited a grave that wasn’t even yours.”

The room went silent.

Daniel had no defense.

Because she was right.

He had protected her.

But he had also destroyed her.

“I’m sorry.”

The words were quiet.

Almost broken.

Olivia laughed bitterly.

“I don’t know if I hate you or if I’m relieved you’re alive.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Both are fair.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel looked toward the window.

“We need to leave.”

Olivia wiped her face.

“No.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“I’m not running.”

“Olivia—”

“I ran once.”

She looked at him.

“Eight years ago.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m done running.”

Daniel stared at her.

Because he saw it.

The exhausted nurse who accidentally walked into a billionaire’s car was gone.

This was a mother.

A mother protecting her child.

Before he could answer…

A loud sound came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Daniel immediately moved toward the window.

His expression changed.

“They found us.”

Olivia’s heart dropped.

“What do we do?”

Daniel looked around.

“There’s another exit.”

She grabbed her coat.

“Then go.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“You said we.”

A small, sad smile appeared.

“You’re still the same.”

“What?”

“Still brave when you’re scared.”

Olivia looked away.

“I’m a mother.”

And that was enough.

Twenty minutes later…

A black SUV moved through the city.

But Olivia wasn’t inside.

Not yet.

Because Daniel had taken her through an underground parking area.

They reached an abandoned side street.

Daniel looked around.

“Someone will come.”

Olivia held her phone.

“I’m calling the police.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

She turned.

“No?”

“The people involved are bigger than police.”

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

Olivia stared at him.

“And you do?”

Silence.

That answer told her everything.

Before she could ask more…

A car stopped nearby.

Both of them froze.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not an attacker.

A familiar face.

Marcus.

Alexander Vale’s driver.

Daniel immediately became cautious.

“Who are you?”

Marcus looked at Olivia.

“Ms. Carter?”

She stepped back.

“Who are you?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Then another door opened.

Alexander Vale stepped out.

The billionaire from the car.

The man she accidentally slept in front of.

The man she thought she would never see again.

Olivia stared.

“You?”

Alexander looked at her.

For the first time, she saw something different in his expression.

Concern.

Not curiosity.

Not business.

Concern.

“I found out someone entered your apartment.”

Olivia looked at Daniel.

Then Alexander.

“You were investigating me?”

Alexander didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Her face hardened.

“Why?”

A pause.

Because he could have given a simple answer.

Because it was logical.

Because it was business.

But the truth was something else.

“Because I saw your name.”

Olivia frowned.

“My name?”

Alexander nodded.

“And I knew you were connected to my brother.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Alexander.”

The two men looked at each other.

There was history there.

Pain.

Anger.

Things never spoken.

Olivia noticed.

“You know each other.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Nobody answered.

Finally Daniel said:

“He’s my brother.”

Olivia froze.

“Your brother?”

Alexander looked at Daniel.

“You’re alive.”

The words were cold.

Not because he wasn’t shocked.

Because he was.

Eight years of believing someone was gone.

Eight years of anger.

And now he was standing in front of him.

Alive.

“You let me bury you.”

Daniel looked away.

“I had no choice.”

Alexander laughed quietly.

“No choice?”

His voice became sharper.

“You disappeared and left everyone else to suffer.”

Olivia stepped between them.

“Not now.”

Both men looked at her.

And they stopped.

Because they both saw the same thing.

She wasn’t choosing either one.

She was choosing Ethan.

“My son is the priority.”

Alexander looked at her.

And something changed.

He respected that.

More than anything.

“Where is Ethan now?”

Daniel answered.

“Safe.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because they’re not after Olivia.”

Olivia looked confused.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“They’re after Ethan.”

Her face went pale.

“Why?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Alexander did.

“Because of me.”

Everyone looked at him.

Olivia frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Alexander took a breath.

“My family has enemies.”

“Powerful enemies.”

Daniel added:

“And they believe Ethan has something they need.”

Olivia’s eyes widened.

“My six-year-old son?”

Alexander looked at her.

“I know how it sounds.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t know.”

She stepped closer.

“He is a child.”

“I know.”

“He likes cartoons.”

“I know.”

“He’s afraid of thunderstorms.”

Alexander stopped.

Because he didn’t know that.

And somehow, that hurt.

Olivia saw it.

“You don’t know him.”

The words landed.

Alexander didn’t argue.

Because she was right.

He didn’t know her.

He didn’t know Ethan.

He didn’t know why protecting them felt so natural.

But he knew one thing.

He had never been this certain about anything.

“We’re going to get him.”

Olivia looked at him.

“Why?”

Alexander held her gaze.

“Because nobody takes a child while I’m standing here.”

A silence followed.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Sir…”

Alexander looked at him.

“What?”

Marcus hesitated.

“We found Ethan.”

Olivia immediately stepped forward.

“Where?”

Marcus looked at Alexander.

“That’s the problem.”

A pause.

“They already moved him.”

Olivia felt the world disappear.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No, no…”

Alexander caught her before she fell.

For the first time, she didn’t push him away.

Because she was no longer fighting a stranger.

She was fighting for her son.

Marcus continued:

“There’s a message.”

Alexander looked up.

“What message?”

Marcus swallowed.

“It says…”

“They want Olivia to come alone.”

Silence.

Then another line.

“One hour.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

Because he understood.

They weren’t just taking Ethan.

They were setting a trap.

And Olivia was the bait.

But they had made one mistake.

They thought she was alone.

They didn’t know Alexander Vale was coming too.

And this time…

He wasn’t negotiating.
