Chapter 4 - The Titled Monster Unmasked

Bradley whipped around to face me, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of shock, rage, and total desperation. The smug, arrogant grin he had worn since entering the hospital had completely disintegrated.
"This is your fault!" Bradley screamed, taking a threatening step toward my gurney. "I don't know how, but you did something! You made a call, didn't you?! You called someone to complain about our marriage, and somehow it triggered this audit!"
Beatrice rushed forward as well, pointing her trembling, manicured finger at my face. "You ungrateful, wicked girl! My son gave you a life! He brought you into our family, gave you a luxury home, paid for your clothes, and let you live off his hard work! And now you bring ruin upon his career while his poor father's body isn't even cold in the ground?!"
I didn't flinch. I sat up straighter against the hospital pillows, looking at my mother-in-law with an icy calm that seemed to terrify her far more than an angry outburst would have.
"Your son didn't give me a life, Beatrice," I said, my voice steady and crystalline. "Your son moved into my luxury condo. He drove the SUV that was purchased under my private family trust. And the 1.2 million dollars in that joint account? Every single dollar was deposited from dividends generated by my personal estate."
Bradley let out a ragged, hysterical laugh. "Your private estate?! What are you talking about?! You don't have an estate! You're an orphan who worked as an entry-level administrative assistant when I met you!"
"I worked as an entry-level assistant in Pinnacle Logistics' regional office three years ago because I wanted to understand how our subsidiary operations functioned from the ground up," I said softly. "I wanted to see if the managers we hired were honest, capable, and dedicated to the employees under their care."
Bradley’s laughter abruptly cut off. His mouth remained slightly open, his eyes searching my face for any sign of a bluff.
"And do you know what I found, Bradley?" I continued, leaning forward slightly, letting the full weight of my authority fill the room. "I found a arrogant, mediocre middle manager who took credit for his subordinates' work, lied on his monthly progress reports, and treated everyone beneath him like garbage. But I was young, foolish, and I fell in love with the charming front you put up. I thought that with the right support, with a loving home and financial security, you would grow into a better man."
"So... so what are you saying?" Bradley stammered, his chest heaving as sweat poured off his chin, dripping onto his silk tie.
At that exact moment, the privacy curtain was pulled back completely.
Carter Vance stepped into the cubicle, flanked by two armed corporate security officers wearing Pinnacle Holdings badges.
Carter did not look at Bradley or Beatrice. He walked straight to the side of my gurney, bowed his head with profound respect, and handed me a leather folder containing the preliminary audit summary.
"The lockdown of Pinnacle Logistics' regional division is complete, Madam Chairwoman," Carter announced in a clear, resonant voice that filled the entire ER bay. "All regional bank accounts under Mr. McMillan's administrative control have been frozen. The corporate legal team has already filed a civil asset recovery injunction against all properties, vehicles, and personal accounts connected to the defendant."
Bradley stared at Carter Vance, his eyes practically bulging out of his head. As a Regional Director, Bradley had seen Carter Vance's face in company-wide shareholder videos and executive annual reports. He knew exactly who the man standing beside my bed was: the Chief Supreme Legal Counsel of Pinnacle Holdings.
"Mr.... Mr. Vance?" Bradley gasped, his knees shaking so violently he had to lean against his mother for support. "Why... why are you calling her Madam Chairwoman?"
Carter Vance turned around slowly, looking at Bradley with an expression of absolute disgust.
"Because the woman you have spent the last three years treating like a dependent is Evelyn Sterling," Carter said coldly. "She is the sole heir to the Sterling estate, the principal owner of Pinnacle Holdings, and the woman who holds seventy-two percent of the voting shares in the very company that paid your salary."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Beatrice let out a strange, choked gasp, staggering backward until her back hit the cold hospital wall.
Bradley’s face turned a sickening shade of gray. He looked at me—truly looked at me for the first time in three years—and realized the absolute, unmitigated nightmare he had summoned upon himself.

"You're... you're the Chairwoman?" Bradley whispered, his voice barely audible.
"I was your wife, Bradley," I replied, opening the folder Carter had handed me and signing my name across the top directive. "But as of five minutes ago, I am simply your landlord, your employer, and the person who is about to take back every single thing you stole."
