Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Bradley stood frozen in the center of the emergency room cubicle, his hands trembling so violently he couldn't even keep his phone steady in his grip. The reality of his situation crashed over him like a tidal wave, crushing his ego, his arrogance, and the carefully constructed illusion of success he had paraded before his family and friends.
"Evelyn... no... please, Evelyn!" Bradley stammered, throwing himself toward the edge of my gurney. He fell to his knees on the cold linoleum floor, reaching out with frantic, sweaty hands to try to grasp my blanket. "I didn't know! I swear to God, I didn't know who you were! If I had known—"
"If you had known I was powerful, you would have treated me with respect?" I interrupted, pulling my blanket back out of his reach. "Is that what you're trying to say, Bradley? That respect, kindness, and decency are things you only offer to people who hold power over you?"
"No! That's not what I meant!" Bradley pleaded, tears finally spilling over his eyes, smearing his costly skin care products across his flushed face. "I love you, Evelyn! I've always loved you! The pressure at work... the stress of my stepfather's passing... it made me crazy! I said stupid, unforgivable things on the phone, but I didn't mean them! You know how stressed I get!"
Beatrice, realizing that her son’s entire financial foundation was evaporating in real time, suddenly dropped her mourning handkerchief and rushed to the side of the bed, her face contorted into a desperate, fake smile.
"Evelyn, my sweet girl!" Beatrice cried out, her voice dripping with artificial affection. "Please, listen to my son! He’s just under so much pressure! We are family! Families go through hard times, but we forgive each other! You can't ruin Bradley's life over a little family argument! What about my husband's funeral guests? What about our reputation?"
I looked at Beatrice, feeling a profound sense of disgust. Just twenty minutes ago, this woman was tapping her umbrella against the floor, calling me an ungrateful, wicked girl, demanding that I cook dinner for fifty people on a broken leg. Now, seeing her son's stolen fortune stripped away, she was begging for mercy.
"Your reputation was built on stolen money, Beatrice," I said coldly. "And your son's life isn't being ruined over a 'family argument.' It's being ruined because he committed grand larceny, embezzlement, and corporate fraud."
Carter Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of white-gloved legal officers into the cubicle behind him.
"Mr. McMillan," Carter stated, his voice booming with legal finality. "As of ten minutes ago, the temporary restraining order and asset preservation order issued by the State Supreme Court has been served on all your personal holdings. The luxury condominium on Grand Avenue—which was purchased using funds redirected from Pinnacle Holdings' subsidiary accounts—has been seized. The locks are currently being changed by court marshals."
Bradley’s head snapped up. "My condo?! That's where I live! That's where my mother is staying!"
"Not anymore," Carter replied coldly. "Furthermore, the luxury SUV you drove to this hospital was registered under Pinnacle Logistics' corporate fleet. Security personnel are currently towing it from the hospital parking structure."
"You towed my car?!" Bradley shrieked, scrambling to his feet, his tailored suit completely ruined and wrinkled from kneeling on the hospital floor. "How am I supposed to get home?! How am I supposed to transport my mother?!"
"You told me to order an Uber with a broken leg, Bradley," I reminded him softly. "I suggest you take your own advice."
"Evelyn, please!" Bradley sobbed, taking a step toward me, but the two armed security guards immediately stepped between us, placing firm hands on his chest and forcing him back. "What about the 1.2 million dollars in our joint account?! Half of that money is legally mine!"
Carter Vance offered a cold, mocking smile as he opened a second document from his folder.
"The joint account you speak of was audited one hour ago, Mr. McMillan," Carter explained. "Every single electronic deposit into that account over the last thirty-six months originated directly from the Sterling Family Irrevocable Trust—a trust to which you have zero legal claim. Furthermore, because you attempted to use those funds to conceal unauthorized offshore transfers, the account has been placed into full court receivership. You do not have access to a single penny."
Bradley looked like he had been struck by lightning. He staggered backward, slamming into his mother, who let out a sharp, terrified squeal as she realized that the wealth she had bragged about to her friends was gone forever.
"You... you left me with nothing," Bradley whispered, staring at me with hollow, lifeless eyes.

I raised my head, looking him dead in the eye, repeating the exact words he had sneered at me through the phone three hours ago:
"Let's see how a jobless freeloader like you survives on the street."
