Chapter 7 - The Return to the Nest

Back at the hospital recovery suite, the atmosphere was a study in absolute peace.

Clara lay propped up against the pillows, her infant son resting soundly against her chest, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect, tranquil harmony. The burning pain in her cheek had faded into a dull throb, replaced by an overwhelming sense of profound, unshakable safety.

Arthur sat quietly in the plastic armchair beside the bed, peeling an orange with a small pocket knife, his weathered hands steady and precise.

The door opened softly, and a nurse stepped inside, holding a discharge clipboard.

“Mrs. Sterling—ah, forgive me, Ms. Vance,” the nurse corrected herself quickly, offering a warm, respectful smile. “Your discharge papers have been fully processed, and your private transport is waiting downstairs.”

Clara blinked in surprise. “Private transport? I thought we were taking my old car.”

“General Vance arranged a secure vehicle for you and the baby,” the nurse replied politely, glancing respectfully toward Arthur. “Your father’s associates handled all the paperwork. Everything is taken care of.”

Clara looked at her father. Arthur didn't look up from his orange, but a faint, knowing smile played at the corners of his mouth.

“Thank you,” Clara whispered softly.

An hour later, Clara and her newborn son were escorted out of the hospital through a private rear exit, bypassing the swarm of reporters and television news vans that had suddenly descended upon the front entrance of the medical center.

Word of the catastrophic, overnight collapse of Sterling Development Group had already hit the financial wires. Headlines flashed across every news channel:

STERLING DEVELOPMENT GROUP COLLAPSES AMID SUDDEN FEDERAL FRAUD RAID. CEO DAVID STERLING FACES MULTIPLE CRIMINAL INDICTMENTS AS ASSETS ARE FROZEN BY FEDERAL OVERSIGHT.

As the sleek, armor-plated black SUV pulled away from the hospital curb, carrying Clara, her baby, and her four older daughters who had been safely picked up from school by federal security details an hour earlier, Clara leaned her head back against the leather headrest.

She looked down at her son. His bright, icy blue eyes were closed in peaceful slumber, perfectly safe, perfectly protected.

The nightmare was over. The wolf was gone. And the general had secured the perimeter.
