Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea

By late afternoon, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the city skyline.
David Sterling sat alone in the executive boardroom of his empty, silent headquarters. The lights had been automatically shut off by the building's emergency security system to conserve power for unverified tenants. The silence was absolute, broken only by the hum of the city traffic far below.
His phone—which had blown up with frantic calls from creditors, lawyers, and panicked investors all morning—was now completely dead, its battery drained to zero.
He had nothing left.
His corporate accounts were locked. His personal bank cards were rejected. His luxury penthouse downtown was currently being tagged with federal seizure notices by marshals. He was a ghost in the system, a man erased by a stroke of a pen from a shadow government he had foolishly believed didn't apply to him.
Desperation, cold and clawing, tore at his sanity.
There was only one person left in the world who could fix this. Only one person who had the key to unlock the iron cage he had fallen into.
Clara.
He knew where her father lived. That modest, peeling-paint house thirty miles outside the city, sitting at the end of a long, overgrown dirt road.

Without a second thought, David stood up, stumbled out of the dark office, and ran down the emergency stairwell to the underground garage. His Porsche Panamera was still parked in his executive slot, though federal seals had not yet been placed across its windshield.
He climbed inside, turned the key, and slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, tearing out of the garage like a man possessed.
