Chapter 5 - The Financial Freeze

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Brianna woke up in our grand master bedroom, assuming she was still in control of the narrative.

She had spent the night rehearsing her story, convincing herself that she could play the victim of a stressful caregiving situation, blame everything on my mother’s "dementia" and Naomi’s "incompetence," and manipulate me into sweeping the incident under the rug.

She had no idea that while she was sleeping, the ground beneath her feet had completely turned to glass.

At 8:30 AM, Brianna walked into her dressing room, picked up her phone, and opened her online banking application to check her daily balances. She intended to transfer $15,000 to Marcus Vance to pay for a retainer on a defense attorney just in case the police follow-up got complicated.

The application refused to open.

A bright red alert banner popped across her screen: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED. CONTACT SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.

Frustrated, she dialed the private client service desk at Private Heritage Bank, where she maintained her personal credit cards and checking accounts.

"Good morning, Mrs. Mercer," the bank representative said, his voice unusually stiff and formal. "How can I assist you?"

"My app isn't working," Brianna demanded, her tone sharp and condescending. "I need you to override the error and execute a wire transfer immediately."

"I am sorry, Mrs. Mercer," the representative replied. "We cannot execute any transactions on your accounts. As of 6:00 AM this morning, a emergency court injunction issued by the State Federal Magistrate has placed a total freeze on all accounts, credit lines, safety deposit boxes, and asset transfers associated with your Social Security number."

Brianna’s breath hitched. "What? That’s impossible! On what grounds?"

"The order was filed under the Emergency Financial Abuse of the Elderly Act, supported by an ex-parte filing by Mercer Engineering Counsel," the clerk stated coldly. "All credit cards issued in your name under Mr. Logan Mercer’s corporate account have also been permanently canceled. Have a good day, ma'am."

The line went dead.

Panicked now, her heart hammer-pounding in her chest, Brianna grabbed her coat, ran down to the garage, and got into her luxury Mercedes-Benz SUV. She pushed the ignition button.

The dashboard lit up, but the engine didn't turn over. Instead, a message appeared on the digital console: VEHICLE IMMOBILIZED VIA REMOTE TELEMATICS. CONTACT LEASING COMPANY.

I had personally revoked her access to the vehicle management system two hours prior.

With her phone buzzing incessantly with notification alerts, Brianna was forced to call a commercial taxi to take her to our main estate bank branch downtown.

When she stepped into the marble lobby of the bank, she was greeted not by a subservient teller, but by Arthur Pendelton, standing near the velvet ropes with two uniformed officers from the State Financial Crimes Unit and a process server holding a thick stack of legal papers.

"Brianna Mercer?" Arthur asked, stepping into her path. His tall frame and dark wool coat made him look like an executioner.

"Who are you?" she demanded, backing away, her voice rising in pitch. "Get away from me!"

"My name is Arthur Pendelton," he said, handing her a thick, heavy packet of legal documents. "I am representing your husband, Logan Mercer. You have just been officially served with a petition for immediate divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty, fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty."

Brianna stared at the papers, her hands shaking violently. "Divorce? He can't do this! Half of everything in his name belongs to me!"

"Not anymore, Mrs. Mercer," Arthur said with a cold, terrifying smile. "Under state law, any assets acquired or targeted through documented criminal elder abuse and grand larceny are subject to immediate civil forfeiture. Furthermore, your power of attorney over Eleanor Mercer has been permanently revoked, and a court order has been issued barring you from coming within one thousand feet of Logan, Eleanor, or Naomi Vance."

"Naomi Vance?" Brianna gasped, her eyes wild. "Her name isn't Vance!"

"No," Arthur corrected smoothly. "Her name is Naomi. And she is currently sitting in the District Attorney's office, accompanied by state investigators, handing over the contents of a blue sewing box."

Brianna’s phone began to ring. It was Marcus Vance.

She frantically answered it, stepping into a corner of the bank lobby. "Marcus! Marcus, help me! Logan froze everything! The police are—"

"Don't ever call this number again, you crazy bitch!" Marcus Vance screamed through the phone, his voice laced with unbridled terror. "The FBI just raided my office ten minutes ago! They have everything! They have video files of us from inside Logan’s house! They have high-definition audio of us discussing Eleanor's trust! He had cameras in the vent, Brianna! He recorded EVERY SINGLE SECOND!"

The call disconnected.

Brianna lowered the phone from her ear. The world around her seemed to spin out of control, tilting violently on its axis.

She turned around to run out of the bank lobby, but standing directly in the doorway were two State Police detectives holding steel handcuffs.

"Brianna Mercer," Detective Miller said, his voice echoing off the polished stone walls. "You are under arrest for first-degree felony elder abuse, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and illegal detention. Hands behind your back."
