PART 10: THE LAST BETRAYAL

PART 10: THE LAST BETRAYAL

The darkness came instantly.

One second, the hospital room was filled with people.

The next…

Nothing.

No lights.

No monitors.

No sound except the sudden panic of everyone trying to understand what happened.

The emergency alarms started.

A red glow appeared from the backup system.

And in that dim light, every face looked like a stranger.

Including the people I thought I knew.

“Claire, stay where you are.”

Evelyn’s voice cut through the darkness.

My body reacted before my mind did.

I moved back.

Away from everyone.

Because my father’s final words were still ringing in my head.

The person standing closest to you.

Not the person far away.

Not the obvious enemy.

The closest.

Officer Price immediately reached for his weapon.

“Everyone stays still.”

His voice was firm.

No one argued.

Not even Evelyn.

The silence was unbearable.

Then we heard it.

A door opening.

Not the main door.

A smaller sound.

The private access door near the medical equipment.

Someone was inside the room.

Someone who knew the layout.

Someone who knew exactly where to go.

My heart raced.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming closer.

Daniel moved toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t.”

He froze.

The pain on his face was obvious.

But I didn’t know anymore.

I didn’t know who was safe.

The emergency lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

And the person standing near the door appeared.

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew him.

Not from the crash.

Not from the documents.

From my childhood.

A face I had seen hundreds of times.

A face from family photos.

A face I thought was harmless.

“Dad?”

The word escaped my mouth.

Everyone turned.

Robert Bennett stood there.

My adopted father.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me to ride a bike.

The man who told me I was his daughter.

The man who lied to me.

He looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

But alive.

My entire body went cold.

The police reacted instantly.

“Robert Bennett, step away.”

He ignored them.

His eyes stayed on me.

“Claire.”

I couldn’t speak.

“You’re alive.”

The anger inside me exploded.

“You knew?”

His face collapsed.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Evelyn was my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father was alive.”

His silence answered.

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Of course.”

Everyone had known.

Everyone except me.

Officer Price stepped forward.

“Robert, you’re under investigation.”

My father looked at him.

“I know.”

Then he looked back at me.

“I didn’t come to hurt you.”

I wanted to believe that.

But belief had destroyed me before.

“Then why are you here?”

His eyes filled.

“To finish what I started.”

The room went silent.

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He took a step closer.

Evelyn immediately moved between us.

“Don’t come near her.”

Robert looked at Evelyn.

“You.”

His voice changed.

Anger.

Pain.

Betrayal.

“You took everything.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know exactly.”

I looked between them.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

Then Robert said:

“Your mother knows.”

My heart stopped.

Evelyn went pale.

“Tell her.”

Robert’s voice shook.

“Tell her why you really found her.”

Evelyn looked at me.

And I saw something.

A hesitation.

A tiny moment.

But I saw it.

The same thing I saw in every liar I investigated.

The second before the truth came out.

“Evelyn?”

She closed her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“The company.”

My stomach tightened.

“The inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted control.”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

But she looked afraid.

“I wanted to protect it.”

“From who?”

She looked at Robert.

Then at me.

“From your father.”

Robert laughed bitterly.

“Still lying.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I saved her.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You used her.”

The room became impossible to understand.

Two people.

Both claiming they protected me.

Both accusing the other.

Both hiding pieces of the truth.

I looked at Alexander.

He looked devastated.

“Tell me.”

He sighed.

“The truth is…”

Everyone waited.

“Your father and Evelyn were fighting over control of Cross Global.”

I frowned.

“But it was mine.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because your inheritance only activates when you turn thirty.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Alexander nodded.

“Your thirtieth birthday.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I turned thirty last month.”

“Yes.”

“And that’s why everything started?”

No one answered.

That was the answer.

Robert stepped closer.

“I found out Daniel was trying to get control of the company before you knew.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked shocked.

“What?”

Robert looked at him.

“You were manipulated.”

Daniel stared.

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

For once…

Robert sounded like he believed him.

“I used you.”

Daniel went quiet.

Then Robert looked at Evelyn.

“But she did too.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did she do?”

Evelyn’s face broke.

“I made mistakes.”

“Tell her.”

Robert’s voice was harsh.

Evelyn looked at me.

And whispered:

“I knew where your father was.”

Silence.

My heart stopped.

“What?”

She cried.

“I knew.”

My voice became quiet.

“For how long?”

She couldn’t answer.

“For how long?”

“Twenty years.”

The room disappeared.

Twenty years.

She knew.

She let me live believing I was abandoned.

She knew my father was alive.

She knew.

And she said nothing.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because he asked me to.”

I froze.

“What?”

She swallowed.

“Your father told me to stay away.”

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because he believed I was the only person who could keep you safe.”

I stared.

“And you agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I hated you?”

A tear fell down her face.

“Yes.”

“Even if I never knew you existed?”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

Because somehow…

That hurt more than everything else.

Then Robert stepped forward.

“I didn’t write that letter to make you hate Evelyn.”

I looked at him.

“Then why?”

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small object.

A key.

Old.

Metal.

He placed it on the table.

“Because the real enemy is still out there.”

Everyone froze.

“What enemy?”

Robert looked at me.

“The person who ordered the crash.”

“But we thought it was Evelyn.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

His face turned pale.

And he said the one name nobody expected.

“Your biological grandfather.”

Silence.

Evelyn gasped.

Alexander stepped back.

Daniel looked confused.

“My grandfather is dead.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“He faked his death.”

My heart raced.

“Why?”

Robert looked at the key.

“Because this key opens the place where he hid everything.”

“Everything?”

Robert looked at me.

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

His answer destroyed the last piece of my old life.

“That he was the one who ordered your kidnapping.”

I couldn’t breathe.

My grandfather.

The person who was supposed to love me.

The person connected to my blood.

Had stolen me.

And now…

He wanted me dead.

The hospital doors suddenly burst open.

Security rushed in.

A voice came through the hallway.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Claire.”

Everyone froze.

Because the voice belonged to a man who was supposed to be dead.

A man who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

My grandfather.

And he said:

“I’m sorry it had to happen this way.”

May you like

A pause.

“But you were never supposed to find out.”
