PART 4: THE MAN WHO WAS ERASED FROM MY LIFE

PART 4: THE MAN WHO WAS ERASED FROM MY LIFE
For thirty years, I believed I knew who I was.
Claire Bennett.
Daughter of Robert and Linda Bennett.
Older sister of Daniel.
A woman who grew up in a house where love always seemed conditional.
Where approval had to be earned.
Where being useful mattered more than being loved.
But now, lying in that hospital bed, connected to machines, I realized something terrifying.
I had never known my own story.
Not even the first page.
The officer’s words kept repeating.
The payment records were signed by Daniel Cross.
My biological father.
A man I had never met.
A man I thought did not exist.
Evelyn Cross stood silently.
The strongest woman in the room looked like she had been hit.
Because she knew something.
Something nobody else did.
“Who is Daniel Cross?” I asked.
My voice was weak.
But the room heard me.
Evelyn slowly turned toward me.
Her eyes were filled with years of pain.
“He was my husband.”
The answer landed harder than the crash.
My husband.
My biological father.
A man connected to all of this.
I stared at her.
“Then why don’t I know him?”
Evelyn looked down.
And for the first time, she seemed afraid.
“Because he disappeared.”
My heart tightened.
“Disappeared?”
She nodded.
“After you were taken.”
The room became silent.
I looked toward my parents.
They avoided my eyes.
And suddenly, every missing piece started moving.
The adoption.
The money.
The stolen identity.
The accident.
All connected.
“Tell her everything.”
Evelyn’s voice was quiet.
But it was directed at my parents.
My mother immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“You have taken thirty years from her.”
A pause.
“You don’t get another minute.”
My mother looked at me.
And for the first time in my life…
She looked guilty.
Not annoyed.
Not disappointed.
Guilty.
That was somehow worse.
“I was scared,” she whispered.
I almost laughed.
Because everyone always had a reason.
Everyone was scared.
Everyone was pressured.
Everyone had an excuse.
Except me.
I was the one who carried the consequences.
“Scared of what?”
My mother’s hands trembled.
“Daniel Cross.”
Evelyn froze.
My father closed his eyes.
“You knew him?”
My mother looked at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“We knew who he was.”
“Who?”
She swallowed.
“He was powerful.”
I stared.
“So?”
My mother’s voice became smaller.
“He had enemies.”
Silence.
“He told us if we helped him, he would protect us.”
My stomach turned.
“Help him do what?”
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because Evelyn did.
“Hide my daughter.”
My mother started crying.
The room felt unreal.
My parents.
The people who raised me.
The people I spent my whole life trying to impress.
They weren’t my parents because fate brought us together.
They were my parents because someone paid them.
I remembered every moment.
My first day of school.
My mother telling me not to cry because Daniel was watching.
My father praising Daniel’s sports trophies while ignoring my achievements.
My graduation.
When I got top marks.
My father only asked:
“Can you help your brother with his business plan?”
I thought they were just unfair.
I never imagined they were strangers.
The police officer cleared his throat.
“There’s one more thing.”
Everyone looked at him.
“We found another file.”
Evelyn took it.
Opened it.
Her face changed.
“What?”
The officer looked at me.
“The original hospital birth record.”
My heart raced.
“Why does that matter?”
Evelyn slowly turned the paper around.
My name was written there.
Not Claire Bennett.
A different name.
A name I had never seen.
My fingers went cold.
“What does it say?”
She looked at me.
“Your original name.”
A pause.
“Was Claire Cross.”
I stared.
Cross.
Evelyn’s last name.
My real name.
The name stolen from me.
For thirty years, I had been living inside someone else’s lie.
Then Daniel started laughing.
Everyone looked at him.
Not the confident Daniel.
Not the spoiled son.
A broken man.
“This is insane.”
Nobody answered.
He looked at me.
“I spent my whole life thinking I was the chosen one.”
His voice cracked.
“And you were the one everyone was hiding.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Because Daniel and I had both been victims.
Just in different ways.
He had been raised to believe he was better.
I had been raised to believe I was less.
Both lies.
Both created by the same people.
The doctor entered.
“Claire needs rest.”
Everyone stopped.
Because the doctor used my name.
Not Bennett.
Not the stolen name.
Claire.
And for some reason…
That felt like the first time I heard my own name.
The room cleared slowly.
But before Evelyn left, she came beside me.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“For what?”
“For every birthday I missed.”
Her voice broke.
“Every night you needed me.”
A tear fell.
“Every moment you wondered why nobody chose you.”
I couldn’t answer.
Because a part of me wanted to forgive her immediately.
Another part was angry.
She was my mother.
But she was also a stranger.
“I don’t know how to do this,” I whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
“I don’t either.”
Then she smiled sadly.
“But we can learn.”
After everyone left, I stared at the ceiling.
My entire life had changed in one night.
But the biggest question remained.
Why would my biological father pay to have me hidden?
Why would he erase his own daughter?
And why did someone try to kill me after thirty years?
Then my phone, sitting on the table, vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
My blood ran cold.
Stop looking for Daniel Cross.
Another message appeared.
You survived once.
A pause.
Then:
You won’t survive twice.
I stared at the screen.
Because whoever sent it knew something.
They knew I was alive.
They knew where I was.
May you like
And they knew exactly what I was searching for.
The truth.
