PART 3

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Lucas stood in the doorway like he had stepped out of another life.
A life where I was still his wife.
A life where I woke up beside him.
A life where I believed his hands would protect me instead of destroy me.
But that woman was gone.
The woman who trusted him was gone.
The woman who waited for him to come home was gone.
All that remained was the woman holding his child.
My child.
My son.
And standing beside Lucas was Vivian Sterling.
She looked exactly the same as the day she watched me leave court.
Perfect hair.
Perfect coat.
Perfect smile.
A woman who had never known what it felt like to lose everything.
Lucas’s eyes moved toward the baby.
For the first time since I had known him, his expression broke.
Not anger.
Not disgust.
Shock.
Pure shock.
His lips parted.
“Emma…”
I stepped backward.
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
Lucas looked at me.
“What happened?”
I almost laughed.
What happened?
After everything?
After six months of sleeping above a laundromat?
After driving myself to the hospital while contractions ripped through my body?
After giving birth alone?
He wanted to know what happened?
“You don’t get to ask me that.”
His face tightened.
“Emma, I didn’t come here to fight.”
“Then why are you here?”
Silence.
A long silence.
Vivian answered.
“We came to see the baby.”
My grip tightened around my son.
“You don’t get to see him.”
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The mask slipping.
“I am his grandmother.”
“No.”
I looked directly at her.
“You are the woman who told me my child would learn hunger.”
The room went still.
Lucas looked at his mother.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
“Mom…”
Vivian ignored him.
“You are emotional after giving birth.”
I stared at her.
“You threatened me.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
That was the thing about Vivian.
She never raised her voice.
She never lost control.
She simply rewrote reality until everyone else questioned themselves.
But I wasn’t the same woman anymore.
I had spent months studying lies.
And I had learned how they moved.
“Get out.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“Emma, please.”
I looked at him.
The word hurt.
Please.
A word from a man who had never begged for anything.
“What do you want?”
His eyes dropped to the baby.
“I want to know if he’s mine.”
The question cut deeper than I expected.
I swallowed.
“You already decided.”
“That was six months ago.”
“Yes.”
I held his gaze.
“And you believed it.”
His jaw tightened.
“I was shown evidence.”
“You were shown what someone wanted you to believe.”
His expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
Before I could answer, Dr. Hayes stepped between us.
“Mr. Sterling.”
Lucas looked at him.
Recognition flashed.
“Dr. Hayes?”
The room became tense.
“You know him?” I asked.
Lucas didn’t answer.
The doctor did.
“I knew your grandfather.”
Lucas looked confused.
“What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
For the first time, Lucas looked uncertain.
Vivian stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.”
Dr. Hayes turned toward her.
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“This stopped being private when someone tried to manipulate medical records.”
The color drained from Vivian’s face.
A tiny reaction.
Almost invisible.
But I saw it.
And so did Lucas.
“What did you say?”
Vivian looked at him.
“Don’t listen to him.”
The doctor ignored her.
“Your son’s DNA test was questioned.”
Lucas looked at me.
Then at Dr. Hayes.
“What are you talking about?”
I laughed softly.
“Now you’re confused?”
He looked hurt.
“Emma.”
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to stand there and act like you’re the victim.”
His expression softened.
And somehow that made me angrier.
Because I remembered loving that face.
“I spent four years saving your company.”
He said nothing.
“I found millions stolen from Sterling Medical Supply.”
His eyes changed.
“You know about that?”
“Yes.”
I stepped closer.
“I found your mother’s accounts.”
Vivian went completely still.
Lucas looked at her.
“Mom?”
She shook her head.
“This is absurd.”
“No,” I said.
“It’s finally the truth.”
Lucas looked between us.
His confidence was disappearing.
“Emma, what did you find?”
I stared at him.
“The reason you needed me gone.”
Silence.
Then Dr. Hayes spoke.
“Richard Sterling suspected something before he died.”
Lucas looked at him.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
The doctor pulled out his phone.
“He contacted me two months before his death.”
Lucas frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“He knew the company was being damaged from inside.”
I watched Lucas absorb those words.
For years, he had believed his family business was untouchable.
Now cracks were appearing everywhere.
“What did he say?” Lucas asked.
Dr. Hayes hesitated.
“He said he made one mistake.”
Lucas swallowed.
“What mistake?”
The doctor looked at him.
“Trusting the wrong person.”
Vivian’s face hardened.
“Enough.”
Everyone turned.
Her voice had changed.
The sweetness was gone.
“You have no right to drag my family through this.”
Dr. Hayes looked at her.
“Your family?”
He gave a bitter smile.
“You destroyed your own family.”
Lucas stared at his mother.
“Mom…”
She stepped toward him.
“Lucas, don’t let them manipulate you.”
I watched him.
Waiting.
Because this was the moment.
The moment where I would find out if anything remained of the man I married.
The man who once held me when I cried.
The man who promised forever.
His eyes moved toward our son.
Then back to me.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“Is he mine?”
The question was softer this time.
Almost broken.
I looked down at the baby.
My son.
Then at the man who abandoned us.
“I don’t know.”
Lucas flinched.
The words hurt him.
Good.
Because they were nothing compared to what he had done.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
I swallowed.
“Because you made sure I never got the chance to prove it.”
Dr. Hayes stepped forward.
“I can perform a proper test.”
Lucas nodded immediately.
“Yes.”
Vivian grabbed his arm.
“Lucas, think carefully.”
He looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Her silence answered.
The room changed.
Lucas slowly removed her hand from his arm.
“Mom.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Don’t do this.”
“Do what?”
“Question me.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“You spent my entire life teaching me to question everyone else.”
He looked at her.
“I just never thought I would need to question you.”
Vivian’s face became cold.
“You are choosing her?”
Lucas looked at the baby.
Then at me.
“I’m choosing the truth.”
Those words should have meant something.
But they didn’t.
Not anymore.
Because truth six months ago would have saved me.
Truth would have stopped him from signing those papers.
Truth would have stopped him from letting his mother destroy me.
The nurse entered suddenly.
“Doctor?”
Everyone turned.
She looked nervous.
“There’s someone else here asking for Mrs. Reed.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
The nurse looked at me.
“He said his name is Daniel Cross.”
The room went silent.
I froze.
Lucas noticed.
“Who is Daniel Cross?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew that name.
I knew exactly who he was.
The man Lucas accused me of having an affair with.
The man in the fake photographs.
The man who disappeared after being used to destroy my life.
A man who should not have been alive.
Dr. Hayes looked at me.
“You know him?”
I slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
My voice barely came out.
“He’s the man they said I cheated with.”
Lucas looked stunned.
“What?”
The door opened.
And a man entered.
Pale.
Exhausted.
Carrying a folder.
His eyes found mine.
“Emma.”
I stared at him.
“Daniel?”
He looked at Lucas.
Then at Vivian.
His expression turned dark.
“They finally know.”
My heart raced.
“Know what?”
Daniel walked closer.
He placed the folder on the table.
And whispered:
“The paternity test was never meant to prove the baby wasn’t Lucas’s.”
Everyone froze.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“It was designed to hide something much bigger.”
My hands went cold.
“What?”
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
And one name repeated again and again.
Sterling.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“Your son is not the only secret Vivian Sterling buried.”
He looked at Lucas.
“Your father had another child.”
Lucas went completely pale.
And Dr. Hayes whispered:
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at my baby.
“It’s the truth.”
And suddenly…
I understood.
My son’s birthmark.
The DNA test.
The lies.
May you like
They were never trying to erase only me.
They were trying to erase him.
