PART 4

Nobody spoke.

Not Lucas.

Not Vivian.

Not even Dr. Hayes.

The only sound in the room was my son breathing softly against my chest.

A tiny, innocent life.

A life that had somehow become the center of a war between people who had spent years hiding the truth.

I looked at Daniel.

The man who had been turned into a weapon against me.

The man whose face had appeared beside mine in those fake photographs.

The man Lucas believed had destroyed our marriage.

“What did you say?”

My voice barely sounded like my own.

Daniel’s eyes filled with guilt.

“I said your son is not the only secret Vivian Sterling buried.”

He opened the folder again.

His hands were shaking.

“I should have come sooner.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“Who are you talking about?”

Daniel looked at him.

“The truth about your family.”

Vivian’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Afraid.

“Lucas,” she said sharply.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But Lucas didn’t look at her.

He was staring at Daniel.

“Explain.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Six months ago, I worked for Sterling Medical Supply.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You worked there?”

He nodded.

“I was part of the internal audit team.”

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because I remembered.

Daniel Cross.

The name from the files.

The employee who had approved some of the suspicious contracts.

The one person I couldn’t locate when I started investigating.

“You weren’t having an affair with me,” I whispered.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“No.”

Lucas turned toward me.

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I knew it.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He froze.

“You knew?”

“I knew you wanted to believe it.”

His expression fell.

“There’s a difference.”

The words hit him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand.

I needed him to feel even a fraction of what I felt.

Daniel continued.

“Vivian used my position inside the company to move money.”

Lucas looked at his mother.

“Mom?”

She remained silent.

That silence said more than any confession.

Daniel pulled out documents.

“I discovered the shell companies.”

My heart raced.

The same thing I had found.

“But before I could report it, Vivian found out.”

He looked at me.

“She needed someone to blame.”

I whispered:

“Me.”

He nodded.

“The photos were created to make it look like you were involved.”

Lucas looked sick.

“No…”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“You didn’t divorce Emma because she betrayed you.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You divorced her because your mother needed her removed.”

Vivian finally snapped.

“Enough.”

Her voice echoed.

“You have no proof.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I was waiting for you to say that.”

He removed a small device from his pocket.

A flash drive.

“I recorded everything.”

Vivian’s face went pale.

“What?”

“The conversations.”

He looked at Lucas.

“Your mother admitting she paid someone to create the photos.”

Lucas stared at his mother.

“No.”

Daniel pressed a button.

A recording started playing.

Vivian’s own voice filled the room.

Clear.

Cold.

“I don’t care what happens to Emma. She was becoming dangerous.”

My stomach turned.

Lucas stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“She found the accounts. She found the transfers.”

A pause.

Then Vivian’s voice again.

“Make Lucas believe the child isn’t his. Once she is gone, everything belongs to us.”

The room went silent.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Lucas looked at his mother like he was seeing her for the first time.

“Mom…”

Vivian’s eyes hardened.

“You’re being emotional.”

He laughed.

But there was no humor.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“No, you don’t get to do that anymore.”

His voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell me what I’m feeling.”

I watched him.

The anger in his face.

The betrayal.

And somewhere deep inside me, a small part of me remembered the boy he must have been.

A child who trusted his mother.

A child who never knew she was capable of this.

But then I remembered the man he became.

The husband who left me.

The father who abandoned his child.

And my heart stayed cold.

Dr. Hayes stepped closer.

“There’s more.”

Everyone looked at him.

Lucas frowned.

“What more?”

The doctor looked at the baby.

Then at Lucas.

“The genetic marker.”

I tightened my hold on my son.

“What about it?”

Dr. Hayes took a breath.

“Richard Sterling had that same marker.”

Lucas went still.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“No.”

Dr. Hayes looked at him.

“But combined with the DNA results…”

He paused.

“The original DNA results.”

My eyes widened.

“What do you mean?”

He looked at me.

“The test you were shown was altered.”

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“How do you know?”

“Because the hospital where the test was processed was one of Sterling Medical Supply’s partners.”

I understood immediately.

Access.

Influence.

Control.

They could change anything.

“The real test,” Dr. Hayes continued, “showed a biological match.”

Lucas looked like the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“A match?”

The doctor nodded.

“Your son is yours.”

The words hung in the air.

Then he looked at me.

“And Lucas is his father.”

For a moment, I felt nothing.

No happiness.

No relief.

Only exhaustion.

Because I had spent six months carrying a child while the world told me he was unwanted.

While his father rejected him before even seeing his face.

Lucas took one step toward me.

His eyes filled.

“Emma…”

I raised my hand.

He stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

The words came quietly.

But they were too late.

Six months too late.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“You didn’t want to know.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he knew I was right.

“I believed the evidence.”

I laughed softly.

“The evidence your mother gave you.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I thought you betrayed me.”

“And I thought you loved me.”

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn’t take it back.

Daniel looked away.

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Vivian spoke.

“You’re all forgetting something.”

Everyone turned.

Her expression was calm again.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

“You think exposing me changes everything?”

She looked at Lucas.

“You still have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Lucas stared.

“What does that mean?”

Vivian smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“The company.”

Nobody moved.

“The accounts.”

She looked at me.

“The inheritance.”

Then at the baby.

“And him.”

My blood ran cold.

“You’re talking about a newborn.”

She shrugged.

“A newborn with Sterling blood.”

The words disgusted me.

Lucas stepped between us.

“You will not go near him.”

Vivian laughed.

“You think you can stop me?”

“Yes.”

His voice was different.

Not the man who left me.

Not the man who believed lies.

A different man.

“I can.”

She stared at him.

“You would choose her?”

He looked at me.

Then at our son.

“Yes.”

Vivian’s face darkened.

“Then you’ll lose everything.”

The door suddenly opened.

A police officer entered with two investigators.

Everyone froze.

“Mrs. Vivian Sterling?”

Her expression changed.

“Yes?”

The officer stepped forward.

“We have a warrant for your arrest.”

For the first time in my life, I saw Vivian Sterling lose control.

“What?”

The investigator held up documents.

“Financial fraud. Evidence tampering. Conspiracy.”

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then me.

Then Lucas.

“You planned this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at my son.

“You did.”

Because the truth had survived.

Even when they tried to destroy it.

As they placed handcuffs around Vivian’s wrists, she looked at me one last time.

There was no regret.

Only hatred.

“This isn’t over, Emma.”

The words sent a chill through me.

But I didn’t look away.

Because months ago, I had been the woman standing alone outside a courthouse.

Broken.

Pregnant.

Afraid.

Now I was standing in a hospital room.

Holding my son.

And surrounded by the truth.

After Vivian was taken away, the room finally became quiet.

Lucas remained standing several feet away.

Unsure.

Almost like he was afraid of me.

Good.

He should be.

“Emma.”

I didn’t answer.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

The honesty surprised me.

“I just want a chance to be his father.”

I looked down at our son.

A father.

A word Lucas had abandoned before ever meeting him.

“I don’t know if you can fix what you broke.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“But he deserves the truth.”

Lucas nodded.

“Yes.”

For the first time in months…

I believed he meant something.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I stared at the screen.

After everything.

After the arrest.

After the truth.

Someone was still calling.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Emma…”

“What?”

He looked at the number.

And whispered:

“That number belongs to someone who died three years ago.”

My blood turned cold.

Slowly, I answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

A voice that made every instinct inside me scream.

“Emma Reed.”

I couldn’t move.

“How do you know my name?”

The voice laughed softly.

“Because I knew your mother.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother?”

I had no answer.

No memory.

No warning.

The voice continued.

“And I know the real reason Vivian Sterling wanted your son gone.”

The room became silent.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then the words that changed everything:

“I’m the man who knows who your father really was.”

The call ended.

May you like

And I stood there holding my newborn son…

Realizing the Sterling family’s secrets had only begun.
