Chapter 6 - THE SHAREHOLDER SUMMIT

Thursday morning arrived under a blanket of heavy, dark storm clouds rolling in from the Atlantic.
The annual Sterling Global Technologies Shareholder Summit was held in the grand auditorium of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Over twelve hundred institutional investors, board members, defense analysts, and journalists packed the room, creating an atmosphere charged with immense corporate tension.
On the main stage, a long curved table was set up for the board of directors.
Julian Thorne sat at the center chair, looking immaculately groomed, exuding an air of supreme confidence. Beside him sat nine other board members, their faces grave as they reviewed the executive emergency folders placed before them.
Renee’s seat at the far left of the table remained empty.
Julian tapped his microphone, his voice echoing authoritatively through the massive auditorium.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed shareholders,” Julian began, his tone dripping with practiced, solemn regret. “We gather today under deeply tragic circumstances. As many of you are aware, our beloved Chief Executive Officer, Renee Sterling, has been battling a catastrophic, irreversible medical condition over the past several months.”
A heavy hush fell over the audience. Cameras flashed as financial news reporters furiously typed on their laptops.
“Regrettably,” Julian continued, putting on an expression of heartbreaking sorrow, “I received confirmation from her medical team this morning that Ms. Sterling has lapsed into a critical state and is no longer capable of performing her executive duties. Under Section 14-B of our corporate charter, I am officially calling for an immediate board vote to dissolve her executive authority and appoint a new Chairman and CEO to lead Sterling Global into the future.”
Before the board members could raise their hands to initiate the vote, the heavy oak doors at the back of the grand auditorium flew open with a resounding bang.
“That vote will not be taking place, Julian!”
A collective gasp swept through twelve hundred people as every camera swung frantically toward the main aisle.
Walking down the center aisle, flanked by a phalanx of armed security guards and legal counsel, was Renee Sterling.
She looked breathtaking.
She was dressed in a tailored crimson power suit, her head un-covered, her eyes sparkling with fierce, unyielding vitality. Walking right beside her, holding her hand with calm, absolute authority, was Daniel Hayes, dressed in his charcoal silk suit.
Behind them, escorted by two Vanguard officers in handcuffs, walked Marcus.
Julian Thorne’s face went from pale grey to a terrifying, mottled purple. His hands tightened around his wooden gavel so hard his knuckles turned white.
“Renee...” Julian stammered, his microphone capturing his shocked whisper. “This... this is a violation of protocol! You are supposed to be in intensive care!”
Renee stepped onto the main stage, completely ignoring the security guards who tried to step in her way. Daniel stayed right beside her, his broad shoulders framing her like an impenetrable wall.
Renee walked straight up to the podium, pushed Julian away from the microphone, and looked out over twelve hundred stunned shareholders and live national television cameras.
“I apologize for my late arrival, ladies and gentlemen,” Renee said, her voice booming clear and strong through the sound system. “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
The auditorium erupted into a chaotic storm of cheers, camera flashes, and frantic shouting from the press.
Renee held up her hand, commanding absolute silence within seconds.
“For the past six months,” Renee announced, pointing a finger directly at Julian Thorne, “Vice Chairman Julian Thorne has been systematically attempting to execute a hostile takeover of Sterling Global Technologies. But he didn't just use corporate maneuvering.”
She gestured toward the big screens behind the stage.
Immediately, Daniel plugged the encrypted steel drive into the main media server.
The massive wall screens illuminated with high-resolution documents: Swiss bank transfer records showing millions of dollars moving from Julian Thorne’s offshore accounts to Marcus, laboratory chemical procurement manifests for Dimethyl-Beryllate, and audio waveforms of recorded phone conversations between Thorne and Marcus plotting her assassination.
“Julian Thorne didn't wait for my illness to claim me,” Renee declared, her voice ringing like a bronze bell. “He attempted to murder me by having my former fiancé poison my morning coffee for eight months!”
A wave of utter horror swept through the auditorium. Several board members jumped up from their chairs in shock, backing away from Julian as if he were a poisonous snake.
Julian stood up, screaming frantically into his lapel mic. “This is a fabrication! A deepfake! Security, arrest these people! Arrest her!”
Before Julian’s private security guards could step forward, the side doors of the auditorium burst open.
A dozen Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, led by the Assistant United States Attorney for Massachusetts, marched onto the stage with hand-cuffs drawn.
“Julian Thorne,” the lead FBI agent announced loudly, stepping up to the board table. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, treasonable sabotage of a defense contractor, and conspiracy.”
Julian tried to run toward the backstage exit, but Daniel stepped into his path.
Julian looked up at Daniel, his eyes filled with insane, desperate rage. He lunged at Daniel, trying to push past him.
Daniel didn't even drop his posture. He grabbed Julian by the collar of his silk suit jacket, spun him around, and forced him down onto his knees directly in front of the center camera, holding him pinned until the FBI agents slapped the steel handcuffs around Thorne’s wrists.
As the federal agents dragged the screaming, ruined billionaire off the stage in front of live national television cameras, the entire auditorium erupted into a standing ovation.
Renee stood at the center of the stage, surrounded by applause, her eyes shining with triumphant tears.
She turned to Daniel.
Without a single word, in front of twelve hundred shareholders, fifty news cameras, and millions of viewers watching worldwide, Renee stepped forward, wrapped her arms around Daniel’s neck, and kissed him deeply on the lips.
