Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AND THE REVELATION

Three days after the explosive shareholder summit, the dust settled over Boston.
Julian Thorne, Marcus, and four high-ranking accomplices were held without bail in a federal detention center, facing dozens of felony indictments that guaranteed they would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars.
Sterling Global’s stock value skyrocketed to an all-time high, fueled by the triumphant return of Renee Sterling and the exposure of the corrupt board faction.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Daniel sat alone in the sunlit drawing room of the Beacon Hill estate.
He had returned his custom charcoal suits to the closet. He was dressed in his comfortable jeans, his old flannel shirt, and his leather work boots. Beside him on the tea table sat his worn leather duffel bag, packed and ready for his return to South Boston.
The six-month contract was officially concluded. The war was won.
Renee stepped into the drawing room, wearing a simple white dress. She looked healthy, radiant, her cheeks flushed with natural, vibrant color as her bone marrow continued its rapid recovery under Dr. Vance’s care.
She saw the packed duffel bag sitting by his feet, and a shadow of deep sadness crossed her face.
“You’re leaving?” Renee asked softly, stopping a few feet away from him.
“The job is done, Renee,” Daniel said, offering a gentle, warm smile. “Thorne is in prison, your company is secure, your health is back, and the press thinks I’m a international hero. It’s time for me to go back to my repair shop and take care of Lily.”
Renee walked over to her mahogany desk, picked up a heavy cream envelope, and walked back to stand before him.
She held out the envelope.
Inside was a certified cashier’s check from Sterling Global’s private escrow account for twelve million dollars—the full payment promised in their original agreement.
Daniel looked at the check, then looked up into her eyes. He didn't reach out to take it.
“Daniel, take it,” Renee insisted, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s yours. You earned every single cent of it. You saved my life.”
Daniel took a slow, deep breath. He took the check from her hand, looked at the twelve-million-dollar figure written across the front, and then slowly, deliberately, folded it in half and set it back down on the silver tea tray.
Renee blinked, stunned. “Daniel? What are you doing?”
“When you called me at two in the morning three months ago,” Daniel said softly, his dark eyes locked onto hers, “I didn't drive across Boston for twelve million dollars. I drove across town because a human being was terrified and alone in a hospital room.”
He stood up, stepping closer to her, his large, calloused hands gently taking hers.
“I took this contract because I wanted to secure my daughter’s future,” Daniel continued, his voice thick with emotion. “But over the last ninety days, watching you fight, watching you smile with Lily at my kitchen table, watching the way you look at me when the cameras aren't flashing... I realized something.”
“What did you realize?” Renee whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“If I take this money,” Daniel said, touching her face softly, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone, “there will always be a small voice in the back of my mind asking if what happened between us was real, or if it was just a business transaction. And I love you too much to ever let money poison what we have.”
Renee stared at him, her eyes overflowing with hot, joyful tears.
“You idiot,” she sobbed, laughing through her tears as she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his neck. “You complete, arrogant, brilliant idiot!”
“I’m an electrician from South Boston,” Daniel smiled, wrapping his powerful arms tightly around her waist, pulling her against his heart. “We’re known for making terrible financial decisions.”

“I don't care about the money, Daniel,” Renee cried softly, pulling back to look into his eyes. “I don't need a twelve-million-dollar employee. I need you. I need the man who stayed when everyone else ran. I need a father for Lily, a partner for my life, and the man who taught me how to live again.”
“Then you’ve got him,” Daniel whispered, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a slow, deep kiss that carried all the warmth and truth of their shared journey.
