Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

One year later.
The annual International Logistics Summit was held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, drawing over two thousand industry executives from across the globe.
Skylar Thorne stood on the main stage of the grand ballroom, keynoting the summit's panel on global supply chain integrity.
Her voice resonated through the high-end audio system—clear, authoritative, compelling—as two thousand audience members listened in absolute silence. Behind her, a massive LED screen displayed her name in gold typography: SKYLAR THORNE - SENIOR MANAGING DIRECTOR, APEX GLOBAL.
She wore an elegant charcoal-grey suit, her skin flawless, her posture radiating an effortless, natural authority that had been forged through fire and proven through victory.
When her address concluded, the ballroom erupted into sustained, enthusiastic applause.
As Skylar stepped off the stage, taking a glass of sparkling water from an event attendant, she noticed a man standing near the edge of the media press row—a representative from an independent financial journal.
Beside him, holding a small digital camera, stood a tall, gaunt man wearing a faded, off-the-rack suit that fit loosely around his thin shoulders.
It was Derek.
He was working as an assistant event photographer for a local trade blog—one of the few entry-level hourly gigs he had been able to secure following his felony conviction and corporate license revocation.
Their eyes met across the twenty feet of carpeted floor separating the stage from the press gallery.
Derek stopped mid-photo.
His face was weathered, his hair thinning, his posture stooped under the weight of twelve months of court-mandated community service, probation check-ins, and financial ruin.
He looked at her—at the woman who had once stood in his kitchen with coffee dripping from her silk blouse, trembling under his calm, cruel threats.
He saw no fear in her eyes. He saw no anger. He saw no recognition of any past authority he had once claimed to possess over her life.
She looked at him the way one looks at a stranger passed on a busy city street—a temporary detail in a vast, brilliant landscape that did not belong to him.
Skylar gave a polite, professional nod to the event organizer beside her, turned her back on the press gallery, and walked smoothly toward the executive lounge where her international partners were waiting to celebrate her success.

Behind her, the doors of the grand ballroom closed, sealing out the noise, the past, and the shadows of a world she had left forever behind.
Outside, the Miami sun broke through the blue sky, illuminating a path that belonged entirely to her.
