Chapter 9 - Returning to the Light

Two months later.

The late afternoon sun turned the waters of Biscayne Bay into a shimmering sheet of liquid gold.

Skylar stood on the balcony of her Edgewater apartment, leaning her arms against the clean silver railing.

The apartment behind her was fully restored—not as it had been during her marriage, but as a space that reflected her own life, her own taste, and her own peace. New artwork hung on the light walls; custom mahogany shelves held her growing collection of literature; her espresso machine sat on the kitchen counter, gleaming under the modern recessed lights.

The front door chimed softly.

Skylar walked inside, opening the door to welcome her close friend and legal counsel, Elena Rostova, who carried a bottle of chilled white wine and two crystal glasses.

"Happy freedom day, Skylar," Elena said with a warm smile, stepping into the bright, open apartment. "Or as I like to call it: official closure day."

"Come in, Elena," Skylar smiled, taking the bottle and walking toward the kitchen island.

They poured two glasses, stepping out onto the balcony as the sea breeze cooled the warm Miami air.

"Have you heard anything from his legal team regarding the restitution payments?" Elena asked casually, taking a small sip of her wine.

"His attorney issued the first cashier's check yesterday," Skylar said, looking out at the boats cutting through the blue water below. "Eighteen thousand four hundred dollars. I had Marcus transfer the entire amount directly to the Miami Women's Crisis Shelter this morning."

Elena raised her glass in a silent toast. "A perfect end to a terrible chapter."

"It wasn't just an end, Elena," Skylar said softly, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "It was the beginning of my actual life. For three years, I thought I was keeping a home together. I didn't realize I was just guarding my own cage."

"Most people never find the key, Skylar," Elena said gently. "You found it the moment you decided your dignity was worth more than his comfort."

Skylar raised her glass, clicking it against Elena’s.

"To dignity," Skylar said.
