Part 8: The Woman Who Knew Everything

The phone kept ringing.

Victoria’s name glowed on the screen.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

The sound filled the room.

A simple ringtone.

But it felt like a warning.

Detective Harper looked at Ryan.

“Answer it.”

Ryan didn't move.

“Mr. Mitchell.”

His voice became sharper.

“Answer the phone.”

Ryan slowly looked up.

“You don't know what you're asking.”

Harper frowned.

“I know exactly what I'm asking.”

“No.”

Ryan shook his head.

“You don't.”

The phone stopped.

The room became silent again.

Then immediately…

It rang.

Victoria.

Again.

This time, I reached for it.

Ryan stood.

“Amy, don't.”

I looked at him.

The fear in his voice told me everything.

“You're scared of her.”

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I picked up.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Victoria spoke.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Amy.”

I tightened my grip.

“You knew.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The word was so simple.

So easy.

My anger exploded.

“You knew everything?”

“Amy…”

“No.”

I walked away from Ryan.

“You knew what your son did.”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

My breath caught.

The detective immediately started recording.

I didn't care.

I needed answers.

“You knew Daniel was killed.”

Victoria sighed.

“I knew there was an accident.”

“Don't lie.”

My voice shook.

“You knew.”

Another silence.

Then she said:

“Yes.”

My entire body felt numb.

For three years, I had mourned.

Three years of believing I had lost my husband to bad luck.

And this woman knew.

“Why?”

My voice broke.

“Why would you let me marry him?”

The answer came softly.

“Because I thought I could control him.”

I froze.

“What?”

Victoria continued.

“Ryan has always been unstable.”

The words sounded impossible coming from his own mother.

“He becomes obsessed.”

“He believes he loves people.”

“But he doesn't understand love.”

My eyes moved toward Ryan.

He looked destroyed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

Victoria said:

“When Daniel found out about him, Ryan panicked.”

The detective leaned closer.

“Who was with him that night?”

A pause.

Then Victoria answered:

“I was.”

The room went silent.

Ryan closed his eyes.

I felt my knees weaken.

“You?”

Victoria’s voice trembled for the first time.

“Yes.”

“I followed him.”

“After Ryan called me.”

My heart pounded.

“What happened?”

“I arrived at the site.”

“Daniel was angry.”

“He wanted to report Ryan.”

I swallowed.

“And you?”

Silence.

Then:

“I begged him.”

“Begged him to stay quiet.”

I stared.

“And he refused.”

Victoria’s voice broke.

“He said he would protect his family.”

My eyes filled.

Daniel.

Even then.

He chose us.

“He said Ryan was dangerous.”

Victoria stopped.

The silence became unbearable.

“What happened next?”

Her answer came as a whisper.

“I pushed him.”

My blood froze.

The room went completely still.

“You pushed him?”

“Yes.”

“But I didn't know he would fall.”

“I didn't know the equipment would break.”

“I didn't know…”

She started crying.

For the first time, she sounded like a human being.

Not a powerful woman.

Not a manipulator.

Just someone who had done something unforgivable.

“You killed my husband.”

The words came out empty.

Victoria didn't deny it.

“I know.”

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

I wanted justice.

But all I could think about was Daniel.

His last moments.

His fear.

His daughter nearby.

My voice shook.

“Why did you cover it up?”

“Because Ryan saw.”

I looked at him.

Victoria continued:

“He saw what happened.”

“He knew.”

“And I thought if we hid the truth…”

“He could still have a normal life.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Normal?”

I looked at Ryan.

“He entered my life.”

“He married me.”

“He became a father figure to my daughter.”

“That's not normal.”

Victoria whispered:

“I know.”

Then something happened.

Something I never expected.

Ryan spoke.

“Mom.”

Everyone turned.

His voice was quiet.

“You should stop.”

Victoria went silent.

Ryan looked at me.

And I saw tears in his eyes.

Real ones.

“I didn't mean to hurt Daniel.”

I stared.

“You threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Each answer hurt.

But he didn't fight anymore.

“I loved you.”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

He nodded slowly.

“I know now.”

A pause.

“I thought if I made a perfect life…”

“You would forget the past.”

I shook my head.

“You never gave me a choice.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

Detective Harper stepped forward.

“Ryan Mitchell, Victoria Mitchell, you are both under arrest pending investigation into the death of Daniel Miller and additional allegations.”

Ryan didn't resist.

Victoria didn't resist.

The strongest people I knew...

Finally looked powerless.

As the officers took Ryan away, he stopped.

He looked at Lily.

My body immediately tensed.

But Ryan stayed several feet away.

“Lily.”

She hid behind me.

He lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

No excuses.

No explanation.

Just those words.

Then he looked at me.

“Amy…”

I didn't answer.

Because there was nothing left.

The man I married was gone.

Maybe he never existed.

Two months later, the house felt different.

Quiet.

But peaceful.

Lily still had bad days.

Some nights she woke crying.

Some mornings she didn't want to talk.

But she took baths again.

Slowly.

With the door open.

With her favorite music playing.

With me sitting nearby.

One evening, she played with her toy boats in the tub.

She looked up.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think Daddy would be proud of me?”

The question broke me.

I smiled through tears.

“He would be so proud.”

She nodded.

Then moved her boat through the bubbles.

“He told me to be brave.”

I froze.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Daddy.”

My heart raced.

“When did he tell you that?”

She shrugged.

“Before.”

Before the accident.

Before everything.

“He said brave people tell the truth.”

I hugged her.

Because Daniel had spent his last moments doing exactly that.

Trying to protect her.

Six months later, the final court documents arrived.

The truth came out.

Everything.

The accident.

The cover-up.

The other children.

The hidden reports.

The people who stayed silent.

Ryan’s family lost everything.

Their reputation.

Their money.

Their power.

But the biggest surprise came from something else.

A letter.

A letter Daniel had written.

Found in his old computer.

Never sent.

The date was two days before he died.

I opened it with shaking hands.

The first line destroyed me:

Amy,

If something happens to me, trust your instincts.

I covered my mouth.

I kept reading.

There is someone watching us.

I don't know who I can trust.

But I know one thing.

Protect Lily.

The tears came.

Because Daniel knew.

He knew something was wrong.

And he tried to warn me.

At the bottom was one final sentence:

The truth always finds its way home.

I folded the letter carefully.

And held it against my heart.

Because after everything...

After all the lies...

May you like

After all the pain...

The truth had finally found its way home.
