Part 10: The Truth They Never Wanted Me to Find

The phone fell from my hand.

I didn't hear it hit the floor.

I didn't hear Claire say my name.

I didn't hear anything except one sentence repeating over and over in my mind.

They took Lily.

My daughter.

The little girl who had spent months learning how to feel safe again.

The little girl who finally stopped looking over her shoulder.

The little girl who trusted me.

Gone.

“Amy.”

Claire grabbed my shoulders.

“Amy, look at me.”

I blinked.

The world slowly came back.

My mother’s voice.

The rain against the windows.

The sound of my own breathing.

I picked up my phone.

My fingers barely worked.

“Call Detective Harper.”

Claire nodded.

Already reaching for her own phone.

But before I could dial...

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Both of us froze.

I stared at the screen.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

Maybe it was Victoria.

Maybe she wanted something.

Maybe she was finally going to tell me the truth.

I answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Not Ryan.

Not Victoria.

Someone else.

“You always were smarter than they thought.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who are you?”

The man ignored the question.

“You should have listened when they warned you.”

My hands shook.

“Where is Lily?”

A quiet laugh.

“She’s safe.”

My eyes filled with rage.

“Safe?”

“You kidnapped her.”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“She was removed from danger.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

A pause.

Then:

“It means you still don't understand.”

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

“Who are you?”

This time, his answer came slowly.

“Someone who knew Daniel.”

My heart stopped.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Who are you?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Daniel’s brother.”

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing.

Because Daniel never had a brother.

At least...

That was what he told me.

“No.”

The man sighed.

“Daniel hid a lot from you, Amy.”

My grip tightened.

“Where is Lily?”

“You will find her.”

“Where?”

“When you find the truth.”

Anger exploded through me.

“Listen to me. If you hurt my daughter—”

“You think I’m the threat.”

He interrupted.

“But you still don’t know what Daniel discovered.”

My stomach twisted.

“What?”

His voice lowered.

“Ryan wasn't protecting a secret.”

“He was protecting someone.”

The line went dead.

Detective Harper arrived twenty minutes later.

By then, I had told him everything.

The call.

The man.

The claim.

His expression was serious.

“We need to move quickly.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“We need to move correctly.”

He paused.

Because he understood.

I had spent months reacting.

Now I needed answers.

“Find Victoria.”

Harper shook his head.

“She escaped before her transfer.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“We believe someone helped her.”

Of course.

Someone always helped.

That was the pattern.

Money.

Power.

Silence.

“Carter Holdings?”

Harper looked at me sharply.

“How do you know that name?”

I showed him Daniel’s letter.

His face changed.

“Amy…”

“What?”

He hesitated.

“This company was investigated years ago.”

“For what?”

“Illegal financial activity.”

“Fraud.”

“Bribery.”

I stared.

“And Daniel found out?”

Harper nodded.

“Possibly.”

My hands curled into fists.

“So everyone lied.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone knew.”

“Yes.”

“And my daughter is paying for it.”

The detective didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

That evening, a location came through.

A warehouse.

The old Carter Holdings storage facility.

The same place Daniel had once worked.

The same place connected to the accident.

My heart pounded.

“I’m coming.”

Harper immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“It’s dangerous.”

I looked at him.

“So is letting strangers decide my daughter's future.”

He understood.

Because he had children too.

Finally, he nodded.

The warehouse was abandoned.

Dark.

Silent.

Exactly the kind of place where secrets went to disappear.

Police surrounded the building.

I stood behind the entrance.

Waiting.

My heart was beating so hard it hurt.

Then Harper signaled.

They entered.

We found Victoria first.

Sitting in a chair.

Not tied up.

Not scared.

Waiting.

But she wasn't alone.

Lily was there.

Alive.

Safe.

The moment I saw her...

Everything disappeared.

“Lily!”

She ran.

I dropped to my knees.

She crashed into my arms.

I held her so tightly I was afraid she would disappear.

“Mommy.”

Her little voice broke.

“I was scared.”

I cried into her hair.

“I know.”

“I know.”

“You’re safe.”

But then I noticed something.

She wasn't looking at Victoria.

She was looking behind her.

At someone standing in the shadows.

Someone else.

The man from the phone.

He stepped forward.

Older.

Tired.

And painfully familiar.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew those eyes.

Daniel’s eyes.

The same expression.

The same sadness.

The same way of looking at Lily.

The man whispered:

“Hello, Amy.”

I couldn't speak.

He looked at Lily.

“I’m sorry.”

My voice finally came.

“Who are you?”

The man swallowed.

“My name is Adam Miller.”

My heart stopped.

“Miller?”

He nodded.

“I’m Daniel’s older brother.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Daniel told me his family was gone.

That he had no siblings.

Adam looked down.

“He lied.”

“Why?”

His eyes filled.

“Because he was protecting me.”

The room went silent.

“Protecting you from what?”

Adam looked toward Victoria.

Then back at me.

“From the same people who killed him.”

My blood ran cold.

“You said Ryan wasn't the only one.”

Adam nodded.

“He wasn't.”

“Then who?”

Adam reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folder.

And handed it to me.

Inside was one document.

One name.

The name that made my entire body freeze.

Because it was someone I trusted.

Someone who had stood beside me through everything.

Someone who cried with me at Daniel’s funeral.

Someone who helped raise Lily.

The document showed:

Financial payments authorized by...

I stared.

“No.”

My voice broke.

“No, this can't be true.”

Adam whispered:

“I’m sorry, Amy.”

I looked up.

Tears filling my eyes.

“Who did this?”

Adam answered:

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Your own mother.”
