Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon
That evening, as the sun began its slow descent below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, crimson, and molten gold, I walked down to the edge of the cliff alone.
The bay below was calm, reflecting the twilight like a giant mirror.
A gentle breeze blew off the water, lifting my hair. In the distance, a solitary red cardinal flew past, landing gracefully on the wooden railing of the gazebo nearby.
It didn't peck at the glass this time. It simply sat there, tilting its bright head, singing a sweet, clear melody into the evening air.
I smiled.
I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a small, yellow plastic ring—the magic unicorn ring Sadie had given me five years ago on that terrible birthday.
I held it up against the setting sun, watching the golden light pass through the cheap plastic gem.
Five years ago, I had believed that ring was just a child’s toy, an innocent game played in the shadow of a nightmare.
Now, I knew the truth.
Magic wasn't about flying over houses or casting spells. Magic was the choice to stand up off a cold marble floor when your body was broken. Magic was the decision to love your child fiercely enough to tear down an empire of lies. Magic was looking at a titanium rod and seeing a wing instead of a chain.
"Mommy!"
I turned around.
Sadie was running down the grassy slope toward me, her dark hair flying in the wind, a bright, radiant smile on her face.
"Grandpa says dinner is ready!" she called out, reaching my side and sliding her small, warm hand into mine.
I looked down at my daughter—the little girl who had never seen me as broken, who had loved me through the fire, and who was now growing into a strong, fearless young woman.
"Let's go eat, superhero," I said, tapping my prosthetic knee against hers with a soft, cheerful clack.
She giggled, taking my hand tightly, and together, side by side, we walked back toward the warm, glowing lights of our home.
