Chapter 5 - The Weight of Steel

The handcuffs clicked around Nolan’s wrists with a sharp, metallic finality that echoed through the silent courtyard.

"Get your hands off me!" Nolan roared, thrashing against Agent Miller’s grip. "Do you know who I am?! I’m the managing director of Finch & Croft! I'll have your badge for this!"

"You were the managing director," Arthur corrected calmly, standing over me as two paramedics in red uniforms rushed into the courtyard with a stretcher. "As of nine o'clock this morning, the board of Finch & Croft convened an emergency session based on the evidence I provided. You have been terminated for gross financial fraud and corporate embezzlement."

Cassidy was already on her knees, crying hysterically as a female officer clamped steel cuffs around her manicured wrists. "It was Nolan!" she shrieked, pointing her trembling chin at him. "He told me to do it! He said if we got Mara declared incompetent, we could take the trust fund and leave the country! It was all his idea!"

"You treacherous bitch!" Nolan spat, trying to lunge at her, but Agent Miller yanked him back, forcing him down toward the marble floor.

I watched them from the stretcher as the paramedics carefully lifted my bruised body. My shoulder was burning with agonizing heat, and my left leg ended at the mid-thigh stump where my shattered prosthetic had been unbolted and laid beside me.

Yet, as I looked at Nolan kneeling on the floor in handcuffs, his expensive suit ruined, his reputation destroyed, his mistress turning on him like a cornered rat, I felt no hatred.

I only felt a profound, beautiful clarity.

"Mara..." Nolan choked out, looking up at me as the paramedics began wheeling my stretcher toward the ambulance bay. His eyes were wide, filled with a pathetic, desperate plea. "Mara, please... tell them it was a mistake! Think about Sadie! She needs her father!"

I leaned forward slightly on the stretcher, looking down at the man I had once believed was my savior.

"Sadie doesn't need a coward, Nolan," I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing across the entire courtyard. "And neither do I."

As the ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting off his pathetic screams, my father stepped into the back of the vehicle, sitting on the bench beside me. He held Sadie on his lap, her little hands clutching her unicorn ring.

"Where are we going, Dad?" I asked, closing my eyes as the paramedic started an IV line in my right arm.

"We're going to Johns Hopkins, sweetheart," Arthur said softly, taking my bruised right hand in his. "Dr. Vance is waiting. He’s already prepped the newest micro-processor prosthetic for you—the titanium model you wanted. The one designed for running."

May you like

He squeezed my hand.

"And then we're going home."
