PART 4: THE MONEY THAT WAS NEVER CLEAN

PART 4: THE MONEY THAT WAS NEVER CLEAN
For several minutes, I just stared at the phone.
Virginia’s words replayed in my head.
You never knew where his first major funding came from.
Three years.
That was when everything changed.
Before that, Grant and I were struggling.
Not poor.
But careful.
Every contract mattered.
Every investor mattered.
Then suddenly…
Everything accelerated.
A major partnership.
A new office.
A luxury penthouse.
A level of influence that normally took decades.
I always thought it was because Grant finally got his opportunity.
I thought it was because we worked hard.
I thought we were lucky.
But now…
I wasn’t sure.
I called my attorney immediately.
“Find everything about the first investment.”
He didn’t ask questions.
He knew from my voice.
Something was wrong.
Two hours later, he sent me a message.
Come in. Now.
That was enough.
When I entered his office, he already had documents spread across the table.
His expression was serious.
“Before I say anything…”
He looked at me.
“Are you prepared for this?”
I hated that question.
Because it meant the answer would hurt.
“Yes.”
He pushed the first file toward me.
“Three years ago, when Grant received his first major investment…”
I opened it.
A company name appeared.
One I recognized.
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
My attorney nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked up.
“That company was connected to Virginia’s family?”
“Not directly.”
He paused.
“Indirectly.”
I kept reading.
The money had moved through several companies.
Different names.
Different countries.
Different accounts.
A maze designed to hide the source.
But the final beneficiary…
Was clear.
The Halden family.
I felt sick.
Not because money was involved.
Because I remembered what Grant told me.
That he built everything himself.
That nobody helped him.
That he wanted to prove he didn’t need his family.
I believed him.
I defended him.
I fought for him.
And all this time…
He had been hiding the truth.
“Why?”
My attorney looked at me.
“That is what we need to find out.”
I went back to the penthouse.
My penthouse.
The place that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every room held a memory.
Every piece of furniture represented a choice.
The sofa where Grant and I talked for hours.
The kitchen where we cooked together.
The balcony where he promised:
“Nothing will ever come between us.”
I almost smiled.
Because he was right.
Nothing came between us.
He destroyed it himself.
That night, Grant returned.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Just tired.
I saw him through the camera.
He looked like someone who had lost everything.
But I reminded myself.
Looking broken did not mean being innocent.
I opened the door.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I needed answers.
He entered slowly.
His eyes moved around the room.
Like he was seeing it for the first time.
“Everything changed.”
I crossed my arms.
“No.”
A pause.
“Everything was revealed.”
He looked at me.
“Avery…”
“Where did the first investment come from?”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You found out.”
Not a question.
A confession.
I felt something crack inside.
“You knew.”
He sat down.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“Eventually.”
I laughed quietly.
“After seven years?”
He looked away.
“I was ashamed.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You were comfortable.”
He didn’t argue.
“I didn’t steal from you.”
His voice was low.
“I never touched your money.”
“That’s not the point.”
I stepped closer.
“You let me build a life on a lie.”
Silence.
Then:
“My family offered the investment.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation answered everything.
“Grant.”
Finally, he said:
“They wanted influence.”
“Over what?”
He looked at me.
“Everything.”
The room became cold.
“Explain.”
He rubbed his hands over his face.
“When my mother gave the money…”
“She wanted control over the company.”
“But you refused.”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
His eyes darkened.
“Then she threatened to expose the source.”
I stared.
“Expose what?”
He looked at me.
And whispered:
“The money wasn’t just family money.”
A pause.
“It came from illegal deals.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
“I found out later.”
“And by then…”
He swallowed.
“By then, we were already dependent on it.”
Everything suddenly connected.
Virginia’s confidence.
Her cruelty.
Her belief that she owned everyone.
Because she thought she had something on Grant.
Something powerful.
“You married me because of the company.”
His eyes widened.
“No.”
“Don’t lie.”
“I married you because I loved you.”
I looked at him.
“Did you?”
He had no answer.
And that hurt more than any lie.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
“Mrs. Halden.”
I froze.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who knows what Virginia has been hiding.”
I looked at Grant.
He heard the voice.
His face went pale.
“Who is it?”
The man continued.
“Your mother-in-law thinks she controls everyone.”
A pause.
“But she forgot one thing.”
“What?”
His voice became colder.
“She has enemies too.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Grant stood.
“Avery…”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He swallowed.
“Whoever that was…”
A pause.
“He’s dangerous.”
I almost laughed.
After everything I had survived…
Danger no longer scared me.
Because now I understood something.
Virginia wasn’t the biggest threat.
She was just one piece.
May you like
And someone else…
Had been watching the entire time.
