PART 9: THE LAST BETRAYAL

PART 9: THE LAST BETRAYAL

For a long time after the call ended…

Nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Grant.

Not even the city outside the windows.

Because we both understood the same thing.

The person who had been helping my father protect me…

Was now the person threatening me.

My father’s assistant.

The woman who had access to every secret.

Every document.

Every weakness.

Evelyn Hart.

“I know her.”

Grant’s voice was quiet.

I looked at him.

“How?”

“She worked with my father too.”

I frowned.

“Your father?”

He nodded.

“Victor trusted very few people.”

“And she was one of them.”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“So she worked for Victor?”

Grant hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

That answer bothered me.

Because everyone kept saying they didn’t know.

And every time…

There was something they weren’t saying.

I opened my father’s journal again.

This time, I searched for her name.

Evelyn Hart.

Page after page.

Nothing.

Then, near the end…

I found it.

A single line.

I was wrong about Evelyn.

My heart stopped.

The sentence below was scratched out.

Almost violently.

Like my father had written it…

Then realized someone might see.

I turned the page.

The next entry was unfinished.

If anything happens to me, do not trust—

The rest was missing.

The page had been torn.

“She removed it.”

Grant looked at me.

“Who?”

“Evelyn.”

He became silent.

Because it made sense.

She had access.

She could have entered the house.

She could have removed anything.

She could have controlled what my father left behind.

I contacted my attorney.

“We need everything from my father’s estate.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even sealed records.”

He paused.

“That will be difficult.”

“Do it.”

A few hours later, he called.

His voice sounded disturbed.

“Avery.”

“What did you find?”

“There is a hidden account.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Another one?”

“Yes.”

“Who opened it?”

Silence.

Then:

“Your father.”

“When?”

“The week before he died.”

My stomach tightened.

“What’s inside?”

A pause.

“A video.”

We accessed the file.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

My breath caught.

Because seeing him alive again hurt.

“Evelyn.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, something happened.”

I covered my mouth.

His voice continued.

“I failed to protect you the way I promised.”

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

“But I need you to understand.”

He leaned closer.

“The danger was never only Victor.”

The screen flickered.

Then he said:

“It was the person I trusted to help me defeat him.”

A sound came from the video.

Someone entered the room.

My father looked up.

And his expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then a woman’s voice.

“Give me the file.”

My entire body froze.

Evelyn.

My father answered:

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

She laughed.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You taught me everything about power.”

A pause.

“And now I’m better at it than you were.”

The video cut.

No ending.

No explanation.

Just darkness.

Nobody moved.

Because now we knew.

Evelyn wasn’t helping my father.

She was replacing him.

The next morning…

News broke.

Evelyn Hart Acquires Controlling Interest in Several Halden and Kane Assets.

I stared at the headline.

“How?”

My attorney answered:

“She used old agreements.”

“What agreements?”

“The ones Victor created.”

I felt anger rise.

“So she was connected to him.”

“Yes.”

“And my father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he stop her?”

My attorney looked at me.

“Because he thought he could.”

That afternoon, Evelyn called.

I answered.

This time…

I was ready.

“Hello, Avery.”

“Evelyn.”

She smiled through the phone.

“I wondered when you would figure it out.”

“You killed my father.”

Silence.

Then:

“No.”

A pause.

“But I let him die.”

The words were worse.

My hands tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he was weak.”

My heart hardened.

“He cared about people.”

“Yes.”

She sounded almost amused.

“That was his weakness.”

The same words everyone used.

The same belief.

Kindness was weakness.

“You wanted power.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A long silence.

Then she answered:

“Because I spent my entire life watching powerful men decide my fate.”

“I watched your father.”

“I watched Victor.”

“I watched families like yours.”

“They built kingdoms.”

“And women like me stood outside.”

Her voice became colder.

“So I stopped waiting for permission.”

I understood.

Not her actions.

But her anger.

She had turned pain into cruelty.

The same way Victor did.

The same way Virginia did.

“Where is the original penthouse deed?”

I asked.

She laughed.

“You still care about the apartment?”

“No.”

I looked out the window.

“I care about ending this.”

Silence.

Then:

“Meet me tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s something your father never told you.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

Her answer was simple.

“The truth about your birth.”

The call ended.

Again.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of my life.

That night, I stood in front of the mirror.

I barely recognized myself.

A woman who had spent her entire life being protected.

Controlled.

Managed.

A woman everyone thought was fragile.

But they were wrong.

I wasn’t fragile.

I was the person who survived all of them.

May you like

And tomorrow…

I was going to meet the last person who thought she could control me.
