PART 3 The Secret My Brother Buried

The file sat between us.

A simple black folder.

No dramatic title.

No warning.

But somehow…

I knew it contained the kind of truth that could destroy a family.

Not financially.

Completely.

I opened the first page.

My brother’s name appeared.

Marcus Hart.

My eyes moved across the document.

At first, I didn’t understand.

It was a shipping record.

A property transfer.

A series of payments.

Nothing unusual.

Until I saw the date.

Ten years ago.

The same year Adrian’s family lost everything.

My breathing slowed.

“This…”

My voice became quiet.

“This is connected.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus didn’t just steal money.

He helped destroy the Cross family.

My father had been the face of the operation.

But Marcus was the person who created the false documents.

The fake inspections.

The hidden accounts.

He wasn’t just involved.

He was the reason they succeeded.

I looked at Adrian.

“And you knew my brother did this?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

His jaw tightened.

“My father discovered it before he died.”

Silence.

Then he continued.

“He tried to expose them.”

My heart sank.

“But they stopped him.”

Adrian looked away.

“My father died believing nobody would ever know the truth.”

For years, Adrian had carried that.

Not just grief.

A mission.

A promise.

He wasn’t chasing money.

He was chasing the truth his family never received.

And somehow…

I understood.

Because I also spent years surrounded by lies.

“What are you going to do?”

I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

“Release everything.”

I nodded.

“Then let’s do it.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re sure?”

I smiled slightly.

“My family stopped being my family the moment they sold me.”

The next forty-eight hours changed everything.

The first leak was financial.

Hidden transactions appeared.

Millions moved through fake companies.

Accounts connected to Marcus.

The second leak was corporate.

Old safety reports.

Inspection records.

Evidence of bribery.

The third…

Was the recording.

The recording came from a former employee.

Someone who had been afraid for years.

A man who worked under my father.

He had kept a copy hidden.

Waiting for someone powerful enough to expose them.

Now he had us.

We played it in Adrian’s office.

The voice was unmistakable.

My father.

Marcus.

And a third person.

A government inspector.

Ten years younger.

Accepting money.

Promising silence.

My stomach turned.

Because I finally heard the truth.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

The truth.

Marcus laughed in the recording.

“Once the report is changed, Cross is finished.”

My father answered:

“And the company?”

“Already handled.”

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“What about the family?”

My father replied:

“They won’t recover.”

I closed my eyes.

They weren’t talking about business.

They were talking about people.

Families.

Lives.

Dreams.

Like they were pieces on a board.

When the news broke, my family collapsed instantly.

Investors disappeared.

Partners cut ties.

The company accounts were frozen.

The same people who once surrounded my father asking for favors…

Stopped answering his calls.

That is the strange thing about power.

People love it.

Until it disappears.

Marcus called me.

His voice was furious.

“You did this.”

I stayed silent.

“You betrayed your own family!”

I laughed softly.

“My family betrayed me first.”

He became quiet.

Then his voice changed.

“You don’t understand what you’ve done.”

I looked at Adrian.

Then back at the phone.

“No.”

My voice hardened.

“You don’t understand what you did.”

He tried to threaten me.

He reminded me of everything he knew.

My childhood.

My weaknesses.

My fears.

But he missed something.

I was not the same woman he controlled.

The girl who begged for approval was gone.

That evening, my mother came.

Not angry.

Not screaming.

Crying.

She stood at the gate.

Asking to see me.

Adrian asked:

“Do you want her inside?”

I hesitated.

Because despite everything…

She was still my mother.

I nodded.

She entered slowly.

The woman who always looked perfect now looked small.

Tired.

Broken.

“Evelyn.”

I waited.

She looked around.

At the mansion.

At Adrian.

Then back at me.

“You destroyed us.”

I stared.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

I almost smiled.

Everyone said that.

“You always think you know everything.”

She stepped closer.

“You were supposed to save us.”

There it was.

The truth.

Even now…

She still saw me as a solution.

Not a daughter.

“I was never your daughter, was I?”

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Her face changed.

For a moment…

She looked hurt.

Real hurt.

Then she whispered:

“We did what was necessary.”

I closed my eyes.

The same excuse.

Again.

Before she left, she turned.

“Evelyn.”

I looked at her.

“There’s something you don’t know.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

She hesitated.

Then:

“Alden Vale was not Adrian’s first plan.”

I froze.

“What?”

She looked toward Adrian.

“He had another reason for choosing you.”

The room became silent.

I turned.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

He knew what she meant.

After my mother left, I faced him.

“What didn’t you tell me?”

He said nothing.

“Adrian.”

Finally, he answered.

“There is one thing.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

He looked away.

“When I first found your family…”

A pause.

“I wasn’t looking for revenge.”

I waited.

“I was looking for a way to destroy them.”

“Then why me?”

His answer shocked me.

“Because you were the only one who didn’t fit.”

I didn’t understand.

He continued.

“I watched your family for years.”

“I saw what they did.”

“But you…”

His voice softened.

“You were the only person trying to stop them.”

Before I could respond…

The mansion alarm sounded.

A security alert.

Adrian’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus escaped.”

My blood went cold.

And then the security officer added:

May you like

“He’s not running away.”

“He’s coming here.”
